Handmade category - in the wrong place
In answer to the final post on the closed thread.
Crafts as a top level category is generally visited by those who want to DO crafts
Handmade would be visited by people who want to BUY crafted items.
You may wish to keep top level categories to the minimum but I would argue that the minimum includes this if you want those who make stuff to sell well here.
Re: Handmade category - in the wrong place
I do sell better elsewhere where handmade is a top catagory. If i were looking for a handmade item i would not think of looking under crafts

Agree
Made up items should be separate to crafts, Hand Made items are ready to use wear.
Crafts are e.g buttons fabric etc
Re: Handmade category - in the wrong place
I feel strongly about this and I hardly try to sell handmade stuff!
Re: Handmade category - in the wrong place
There are over 5090 listed items which have hand made in the title, 4.555 for handmade, 57 home made and 95 for homemade but only 391 items are pinned onto the hand made pinterest board
I know there are a lot more hand made items listed but not all of them have hand/home made in the title.I know this because on various occasions while searching for hand made items to purchase, not all sellers had put hand or home made in the auction title!!
If a stand alone category was made who is going to transfer ALL these hand/home made goods into the correct catergory?? I had this tedious task at another auction of transferring items into the correct caterogry and it takes forever! Im sure ebid admin dont want to do it either.
I suspect only a few will bother to transfer their items, just like the few sellers who have bothered to use pinterest etc.
Does ebid actually want to compete with the other hand made auction sites? surely if hand made is in the title that should suffice.
I suppose the question is - how do buyers of handmade items locate them by the auction title or via the crafts category?.
Are we a general auction site or a hand made auction site? if we are an auction site then i suppose handmade should stay under crafts. although it often appears to me that a lot of handmade sellers dont really know where to list their items. is this because there are to many sub cats?
I suppose if ebid had as many handmade sellers as the stamp sellers then maybe a stand alone handmade category would have been feasible

Whatever the right answer is, that is not it!
My personal preference would be for a new "quality" - a tick box for "handmade" which would allow people to search for it.
Such handmade items as I do list here, I list under the correct category for the item! Hiding them under Crafts with all my knitting patterns would be crazy!
Re: Handmade category - in the wrong place
yes i too have my hand knitted baby things in the baby catagory and not crafts but i'm never sure quite where to put my cards. Of those 5090 items that say handmade over 1350 of them are mine and not all my handmade items say handmade.
Maybe there just aren't enough sellers of handmade items to make it a top level catagory

they have added another answer to the request and it is still no

And it is still the wrong answer!
It would be better in "Everything else"
Re: Handmade category - in the wrong place
Baby Stuff (1,999)
Spirituality & Metaphysical (5,191)
Charity Auctions (372)
Antiques (4,596)
Musical Instruments (5,568)
Tickets & Travel (247)
Spirituality & Metaphysical (5,191)
Wholesale & Large Lots (5,689)
handmade has over 5000 + listed items - whether you like it or not at least 3 other auctions sites deal mostly in handmade should ebid follow this trend?
Who would look for and transfer all the items in to the new category? How difficult would it be? Madelaine and Maelbrigda would you do it? because i suspect handmade sellers who dont come to the forum wouldn't.
Id like to see a sub category for knitting & crochet patterns in collectables there is one for sewing patterns. As you are aware madelaine 1940's patterns are hard to get so that makes them collectable.
Where does creating new categories and sub cats end? When i look at what is selling it seems to be mostly stamps, postcards, coins and random stuff that is top of the list.
Ebids biggest rival has handmade under crafts because that is essentially what it is - hand crafted .
