Hello all,
I am not sure if you can help me. Today I bought two signed watercolours by Victor Hernandez. One is of sweetpeas, the other roses. Beautiful still lifes in original wooden frames. All I know is he lived from 1827 -1901 and was Spanish.Seems he has sold a few oils for quite a bit. I would be most grateful if anyone knows anything about this kind of thing.

Hard to say without seeing a pic at least. Victor Hernandez is a fairly common name, and unless you know for a fact that these are from the 1800's, it might be worth researching a bit more. There are a lot of people who copy famous pieces, and there are undoubtedly some current artists with that name. Generally speaking, watercolors sell for less than oils, but not always. Depends on the piece, the size, the artist and reputation, skill of the particular piece, and rarity. Have some pics??
Hello ladies :) Thanks for your replies. 99% sure they are original water colours. Looked with magnifying glass and its rough water colour paper with no digital dots to indicate a print. Each painting is approx 18 x 24". The artist mentioned in OP seems to paint only still life flowers in vases or jugs as are these. Found them in a charity shop and bought them for my "granny chic" bedroom makeover. I was intrigued because of the signature which turns out to be a listed artist.

Estimate was £30-£50 but little interest and lot failed to sell: I would estimate £20-£30 at auction for originals of similar size and quality by the same artist.
