Product Attribute Additions to Categories
eBid will be seeing many new product attributes being added over the coming months. We will be working on these on a category by category basis.
We'll be working on the most obvious ones to start with before we launch the new system but any of your regular or favourite categories you would like us to spend some time on just drop a note here and perhaps the most important attributes for the at category also.
Thx,
Gazza

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Seeking the opinion of users you will be lucky to get two to agree (and end up with a headache).
You would likely be better off looking what filters commercial enterprises use to sell their goods. For example, for clothing - what filters do someone like Marks & Spencer use on their site? Similar for other categories of goods.

Stamps could use mint/used for a start

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Thx Madelaine,
A "Qualtiy" filter for stamps is in place and ready for launch.

Need to have a third attribute "mixed" to cover when more than one stamp is listed in one lot with some being "Mint" and some being "Used".

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
At the risk of hearing "Off with her head!" (Alice in Wonderland) I would suggest that you take a look at "the other side" and see what they offer. Being a competitor that we would like to "rescue" buyers from, offering something that the buyers are familiar with might make newbies feel more comfortable shopping here.
As for spelling - please make sure you include US spellings, which sometimes differ from the UK. I.E. Jewellery - Jewelry
"Ducks head" and leaves..........

I suggested this some time back but it fell on deaf ears. Surely it makes sense to look at a well-established site for reference. Part of the problem here is that new buyers are not comfortable with the lay-out.
Just take a look at the Craft > Needlecraft and Yarn category for a start. Far fewer to negotiate than the absolute senseless jumble on here.
Don't hold your breath folks........ blue in the face springs to mind.

Totally agree with the Craft Needlecraft and Yarn category

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Rather than proliferate attributes, the solution for mixed lots is not to use the attribute.
Nobody is going to look specifically for "mixed".

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Well I agree that there are far too many subcategories. My items stop selling when I used categories such as Olympics in stamps which divide into years and winter/summer and olympics/paraolympics. The deep subcategories are a dead area, so I stopped using them and sales picked up again.

Which was my point in #2. User driven categories is what mainly led to the proliferation of categories on the site.
Stamps, in particular, suffered from this as no two sellers could agree on what categories were needed to list stamps. Even between different countries (particularly UK/US) their was a mismatch on what was condidered the 'correct' form.
My concern is that the same will happen to attributes if they are user driven.

If attributes are to be used, just having "Mint" and "Used" will be insufficient. If that is all there are, sellers would not be able to assign attributes to lots which include mint and used stamps. I don't like the idea of attributes very much anyway.

So long as we are allowed to do that.
The "users" disagree is not a helpful comment. The USA/UK thing is valid - the standard catalogues organise things differently, but the main problem is ignoring those who know what they are talking about. If Bill and I disagree about stamp cats, it is in the margins - mostly we both know what we are talking about. The biggest problems are caused by ignoring expertise. I would be perfectly happy to be ignored by eBid so long as the person they don't ignore knows what they are talking about.

Similarly, if Madelaine, Bill and I disagree it is to a minor minor degree. The UK and the USA do do things differently but, for that matter, so do the French, Germans and the Spanish. We should not ignore Europe. Personally I sell far more stamps to Europe than I do to the USA.
I agree with Madelaine, eBid should consult the major sellers in all categories before making changes. Making changes to copy another site is not valid.

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
My suggestion for the clothes colours would be to list the common colours in a drop down, but also have a free-text option for fashionable colours. Each season the fashion industry comes out with a different palette of colours - it may look like red, but it is a different shade of red from last year. Many times I have bought items from a catalogue in consecutive seasons and the colour looks the same but on close examination with the original from last season there is a subtle change.

I don't think this will work

Totally agree. Keep to the norm on clothing (red, blue, green etc.) as the set-up of each individuals PC will vary the colour. IMO it will be up to the seller to describe the shade of colour. For instance, describe the colour as red, scarlet, dark, burgundy, claret, red with a pinkish tinge etc.
A colour attribute list would just be endless.

Electrical goods - new in box, unused, used, refurbished, for parts?

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
As everyone else said of course all types of clothing should have Colour Sizes etc. All women's, Men's & Kid's. But also need to have sizes and colour for footwear.

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Need a color and style additions, variation to 90% of categories.most for electronics category.

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Under Knitting & Crochet patterns, the yarn weight attribute needs "mixed" added - pattern books often contain patterns for different yarns (indeed, I'm listing such an item right now)
-
Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
As I start to add attributes to craft patterns I've discovered a language problem. 8ply means different things in different English speaking countries!
I am,as Gazza would probably anticipate, not thrilled with the implementation of this
Most knitting patterns don't have a "theme" - they are for clothes not fancy dress!

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
i'm holding off relisting my mums knitting patterns until it is finished,

You should ask in the right format for your paticular item eg one of mine
Crafts, Handmade & Sewing > Scrapbooking & Paper Crafts > Die Cutting & Embossing >Metal Cutting Dies

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
I wouldn't hold off listing patterns because of the attribute stuff, Penni. Mine are still selling.

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
It would be helpful if there were "colour" Attributes under Health & Beauty > Hair Care > Styling Products.

Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
We've added some attributes to STYLING PRODUCTS but colour isn't really relevant for that category.
We do have HAIR COLOUR which we have also just updated.
Thx,

I don't see an option to enter all the multiple colour options I require. The drop-down menu has no option for "Blonde", "Light Grey", and "Dark Grey", for example.

There are various shades of blonde in the list.
If you can't find what you want in an attribute list select 'None of the Above' and then enter your own value in the box provided.
With a bit of luck eBid monitors user defined values and updates the lists if a value is commonly entered.

But as far as I can see, the "None of the Above" option only allows you to enter *one* customised colour, not 7 different colours. When I click on the "Add Multiple Variations" button, I get a non-customisable drop-down menu with insufficient colour options.
The hair product I sell comes in seven different colours, one of which is just plain "Blonde" - for which there is no exact match in the drop-down menu. Ironically, there is an option for just plain "Grey" but no "Light Grey" or "Dark Grey".
The menu also seems to insist on a "Type" category when I don't need a "Type" attribute, just "Shade". When I try to remove the "Type" field, it won't let me. :(

Hair colours seem a bit like paint colours; different manufacturers have different names for the same colour. If every possible colour name were given the list would be unmanageable. Blonde seems an all encompassing term for a whole range of shades. So no such thing as just blonde, it would be qualified as 'something blonde'. I would have thought [see note] your 'blonde' would fit into the available selections somewhere. That said, if None of the Above appears in one menu then it seems reasonable that it should exist in another.

There appears to be a bit of a validation glitch in the multiple attributes form. If you select two genders (e.g. Men and Women) and then various shades, click Next, then Back, then delete one of the Genders, then Next it happily accepts the entry without a Type being given. Though, again, i would have thought your product would have a type - even if only permanence.
Note: Since my own hair has long ago deserted I don't profess to be an expert on the subject.

Maybe you should try my product ;). But seriously, it would be helpful if there were an option to allow me to enter the 7 colours using my own words. Ditto for shipping options, which I have commented on elsewhere.

In the listing for Mens Tee Shirts can you expand it to include 3XL size and not just show XXL plus.
When do you plan to add size listings for Womens Vests ?
