Can I return faulty Canon printer purchased almost 2 years ago?
In January 2015 I purchased a Canon Pixma printer/scanner from Tesco Direct.
This week it has decided it has given up on printing - which I usually need every day for parcel labels.
There is a horrible grating/grinding noise and the paper won't feed in.
Am I within my rights to return as faulty to the local Tesco store?
I have the original order details but am unable to print out..............
Re: Can I return faulty Canon printer purchased almost 2 years ago?
It would come under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Though you could approach the supplier to see if their in-house policy exceeds your statutory rights and will repair or replace it regardless of their legal obligations.

It would come under the the Sale of Goods Act 1979 as you bought it prior to the law change in October 2015 but even if you don't have a legal right, companies' reputations depend on giving decent service. So you can always ask - and tell them you're disappointed if they don't help. See here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/sho...s-wallet-print

Thanks Penni - have just done that.
Re: Can I return faulty Canon printer purchased almost 2 years ago?
My first printer was a Canon, that just stopped operating with no notice, I contacted Canon customer services about it and from the fault codes they diagnosed that I could have it fixed. However the cost of the repair was substantial and they would give no guarantee that it would fix the problem. The cheap and logical answer was to buy a new printer, after research I chose a Kodak which I was quite pleased with however this also eventually failed and Kodak had by this time stopped producing printers. So another printer was bought (an Epson) which is operating okay up to now.
The sensible option may be to buy a new printer, hopefully one that takes the same cartridges if you have any left.
Good Luck with it.
Re: Can I return faulty Canon printer purchased almost 2 years ago?
I do not know which model you have, but most of the most recent Pixmas give access to the "deep inside" from the rear. Check the user manual. It's very easy to remove an internal paper jam and it is explained in that manual. The sound is a grating one by the way.
Usually the manual is on the Driver CD - if you have lost it you may download a copy from Canon. It is not the same as the "Quickstart guide".
Anyway, if you have not checked for this, I'd do that first.
If you care to tell me which model you have I should be able to tell you how to unblock it.

IMO unless the printer had a 2 year guarantee then no you are not within your rights unless you purchased the 'extra' guarantee period that costs a fortune! You could possibly buy a new printer for the same amount.
I have the same problem at work with a Brother printer - it grinds and tries to take in the paper even though the cassette is full. Usually the paper is cold/damp from the conditions of being in a unit on an industrial estate without overnight heating. My solution is to disconnect the mains lead and turn off the PC. Restart the PC, take the paper from the cassette and flick through the paper, add more to make it full. Then connect the printer and try again. This may take 3 or 4 attempts but I get there in the end and the printer works perfectly. Damp/cold can cause the problem Annie.
I wish you luck on returning the printer to Tesco and, I'm sure, we'd all love to know the outcome.

Tesco have been in touch via their Facebook page - no joy - they won't accept a return :(

I would stand your ground and argue that it hasn't lasted a reasonable length of time.
It's important to know your basic statutory shopping rights. So to help remember them, just think of the SAD FART technique. By law, goods are faulty if they're not of...

This is true even if you buy items during a sale or with discount vouchers.
If you're wondering what a 'reasonable length of time' is, an example should help. It's probably not reasonable for a £2,000 plasma TV to break after nine months, but is for a 50p torch.

Bought a new printer today from Hewlett Packard - so far, so good.
Himself is going to take a 'look' at the Canon one ..............
p.s. we now have 3 surplus printers and 2 flat screen monitors tucked away at the back of/on top of our wardrobes :)
Re: Can I return faulty Canon printer purchased almost 2 years ago?
Annie you could try phoning canon to see if there is a 2 year manufacturs warranty

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Pretty much the same as my brace of MG5550's
Unplug the printer and turn it so you are looking at its rear. There is a panel curving upward. To the right of that panel you will see a projection, which on close examination you will see to be a handle. Grasp this and swing this down.
You can now see the paper path. Most simple jams occur at the front of the machine, but the paper feed in from the front at the bottom, around the rollers you now see, and out from the front above the entry.
Examine this path carefully, using a torch if necessary (some corners are a little dark)...If you are lucky you will find paper jammed in here. It may be a large amount or a small piece...so do use a torch!
If unsure take a pic and send it to me. Good luck.
Re: Can I return faulty Canon printer purchased almost 2 years ago?
A little known fact...the engine in a HP printer is usually a Canon. Occasionally it is an Epson engine; this is rare. The main difference is in the ink cartridge style....I always use 3rd party cartridges for Canon, as Epson can be sneaky. As for HP - their cartridges have to be "rebuilt" to give a 3rd party ink. If you get the Canon running again then take the HP back when the starter ink has finished and claim it to be faulty. They never declare the running costs on these things, which is why I use Canon with carefully selected 3rd party inks.
