Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
Hi Folks,
Remember the Old Floppy Discs?
I size the photos on my com. I wish to keep. So far so good.
Is it possible to upload photos from my computer to a floppy disc then transfer them back to my computer and upload to a Auction Site at a later date.
Example. Disc with furniture. Disc with Paintings. Disc with Crockery.....
Thank you in advance

Why? Why not store them in folders on your computer? Surely your hard disk is not that tiny?

Apparently the OP isn't going to reply to you. See their other thread: http://www.ebid.net/forums/showthrea...o-sign-in-here

So much conflicting advise out there, and I'm no computer nerd by a long chalk, I'm advised to back up all photos,Documents. In the event of a computer crash there is a fair chance of losing all info one should have backed up.
Docs should be backed up on a memory stick or a site called "Clouds"?
Its a full time effort keeping abreast of this technology....Phew

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
Right... yes, you should have things backed up. Dropbox is a free solution you could use which would get the back up out of your house
https://db.tt/CFZdW3Ul
is a link to join (and I get a bit more free storage.. but then you can invite all your friends)
you could also store your stuff at www.photobucket.com
or you could use a memory stick or two

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
P.S. it is not common for me to agree with Juliebabe but floppy disks are so yesterday! Seriously, few machines can read them so, in case of a disaster with your current machine, you will probably not be able to read the things any more.

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
Yes! is the answer to the OP's question, if you still have a working "a" drive.
BUT - I've recently purchased a new computer, & it doesn't come with a fitted "a" drive as standard any more.
I guess it may have to be a special order? (if you can get one at all?)
The day is fast approaching when (if not already here) you won't be able to get an "a" drive, therefore you won't be able to read the stored information.
As suggested by others, I would be finding an alternative solution to your storage issue.

The simple answer is yes, if your machine has a suitable drive fitted.
However, if we are talking about the 3.5 inch disks the largest capacity available for storage (on a PC) was a mere 1.44 megabytes. This by today's standards is tiny. Most modern storage devices have a capacity which is hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of times larger.
Most modern storage devices will work out cheaper on a per megabyte basis when compared to buying the almost obsolete floppy disks. However, modern devices will require more from your computer hardware and may not work with a system that is old enough to have been fitted with a floppy drive.
Floppy disks degrade over time. They are also subject to both physical and magnetic damage and are therefore unsuitable for storing valuable data on a long term basis.
Most up-to-date PC's will have a DVD burner built in. Despite the name it doesn't cause DVD's to catch fire. It just gives the machine the capacity to store large amounts of data on a DVD. Whilst most DVD's are of a single use variety (as in you collect together all the data you wish to store, add it to the DVD and then once finished it cannot be added to, edited or deleted) there are other re-writable DVD's available which can be re-used on multiple occasions.
Once again though, as modern storage devices have grown in capacity they have also dropped in price. There are also quite a few available that contain built in software to automatically backup your files as soon as you connect the storage drive to your computer. Although as I have mentioned before it often does require a computer that is reasonably up-to-date.
So, to get back to your question, you could use floppy disks, but when there are so many reasons not to, why would you?

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
I've been using Zip disc's, however new computer has 2 drives and I am using 2 external's for backup..A bit overkill, but good if one needs it.

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
I needed two months to think about this as the program I used to aid my thoughts was on floppys and every now an again it requested disk 2.
My opinion is that Floppy Disc R is most likely CD-R (DVD-R).
So storing photos on disc is a physically handy method of cataloguing.

Floppies. A blast from the past!
Floppies went out about the same time that Viagra was introduced.

LOL! :)
Some time ago I purchased an external drive that allowed me to move info. off floppy disks to my thumb drive. At less than $20, it was a good investment, as I had several scripts on floppies that I didn't want to lose. The drives aren't hard to find and might be a good purchase if you continue to use floppies, though I'd advise transferring important info. to a thumb drive or hard drive or both. Just the 2 cents of a semi-confirmed Luddite... :)
Best wishes for many sales to all,

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
To the OP: Yes it is entirely possible to use any type of floppy disk as a backup medium. It is highly un-advisable to do. The reason being is that the magnetic film and opening mechanisms used on or in them have a high rate of failure. They should be considered a VERY LAST resort. I would also rank the old tape back up systems of this era a last resort.
Back in the 90s there were systems made by iOmega call Zip drives... those go right along with the advice about the floppies... more capacity than the floppy but I doubt any modern operating system would acknowledge there existence.
Then in the 90s optical media became the back up medium of choice with CD-R CD-RW CD+R etc... which of course led to DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc.Up until today where we have BlueRay Roms that can hold many GBs of data. There are a good back up method if you plan to need the data latter... not so much of a temporary point A to B medium.
Now the most common Point A - B type mediums are small like flash drives, hard drive enclosures that house laptop or desktop drives in them and use USB or e-SATA, and last but not least thumb/jump/ or flash drives if you prefer to call them.
Forgot to add... before the invent of the "flash drive" as we know it today there was a lot of other competing mediums. I believe this took place because of the race to become a standard for the digital camera popularity explosion. Early on there was CF or "Compact Flash" (anything but compact by today's standards), Sony's Duo stick, Secure Digital (which is still around in various forms... mostly in the mobile phone markets now), and a few others that have faded in popularity.

Best way to use diskettes for storing photos: http://www.instructables.com/id/Floppy-Disk-Bag/
When you've finished the project, print out your photos, store them in bag. Done.

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
Why not just get an exernal storage device which is essential an external hard drive? That way you can back up everything you need to, pictures, documents, music etc. and when you plug it in to your desktop/lappy you can upload to a website direct from the external drive if you have a more up-to-date computer and not a 15 years load of rubbish which my re-writeable CD/ROM disks have more space than the hard drive!

Re: Floppy Discs. Can I use them to store photos
I would think that in this day & age the use of an inexpensive flash drive would be more convenient if you wanted something easily transported and compatible with a variety of computers.
I'm not sure any of the later versions of operating systems would have the drivers to run a floppy disc drive.
