planning on listing old laptop
for spares, and I am not sure if I should leave the operating system on or not. Its Windows 2000 Pro (!) and works fine other than the fact sometimes randomly the keyboard sticks so you get a random oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
or ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc that you cant stop (cleaning under the keys didnt work).
Basically I just want to be as sure as possible that all my data is wiped off. What is the best way to do this?
Re: planning on listing old laptop
My local recycling group always prompts anyone offering an old computer to remove the hard drive, but I have no idea how to do that with a laptop! I really should find out tho' as I have an old one here gathering dust!
Re: planning on listing old laptop
just unscrew the panel and pop the drive out on most lappies
Re: planning on listing old laptop
Agree with the above, definitely remove the hard drive and any other external drives before listing.
Best wishes for many sales to all,

From firsthand experience: not only can you remove the hard drive from a laptop, but if it's still working, you can get an external hard drive enclosure and use this old hard drive as an external drive on another computer!
My old laptop's hinges and wires between the screen and brains gave out and after getting it repaired twice, I decided it was time for a new computer. Recycled the old computer, saved the hard drive from it, and use it now to fetch old files.
