Another request for handmade as a top level catagory please

Hand made, however you spell or describe it, is a growing trend. I suspect it is a browsing category. The most important thing is that it is moved out of crafts which means craft materials.

If I were to have my way I would make it a flag on an item which could otherwise be in with the items of similar function so advanced search would include a tick box to allow someone to search for just hand made items which match their criteria.

As I sell very few of these items and this discussion feels increasingly acrimonious, this is my last post on the subject. I'm not in the mood for feeling attacked even if those who seem to be doing it don't mean it personally.

'Twas always thus, and always thus will be. That is ever the problem when two or more attempt to define categorisations; they never can agree what is correct.

For me (maybe wrongly), craft and handmade are pretty much synonymous.

Would items made at home on a sewing machine be handmade? for example baby clothes or would these go in the normal clothes category?

I used to make (on the machine) dolls pram sets eg rug and cushion would these be classed as handmade?

I would say they were handmade.

The problem with doing it the way you suggest is that if someone is doing a search that is by catagory they will never find handmade as it is hidden away in the crafts section

There was no inference of a scam whatsoever. I stand by what I said exactly! To suggest otherwise is to cloud the real issue. Many items which we assume are machine made are in fact made by hand in third world countries; it's well known and part of the sweat shop culture.

The question is, surely,. is hand made a category or a method of making? The word manufacture literally means hand made, and our use of the word "factory" is simply an abbreviation of the original word: manufactory. We no longer use the word in this way, but such manufactories do still exist.

OK... I'll try again... Can we discuss the structure of this crafts category rather than what is going into it?
