Re: Unknown banknotes... Help please!
It is obviously a different denomination and does not have the script around the edges, but this very similar image shows up as Korean on the site linked below.

Whereas this site, when translated, refers to a similar note as being from the Russo-Japanese war:

This information was found using http://www.tineye.com/ to compare your original image with millions of others on the web and track down those that are very similar. From those results you can visit the websites of those images to see what they say about the image.

Got it! Thanks to everyone who has replied
where did you find the date, Dean? I can't see it!
and tineye is going to be VERY useful, Damian, as I keep getting things I have no idea about to sell.

You can do the same with Google Images (as jeweleffects pointed out) by simply dragging and dropping an image into the search bar.
Re: Unknown banknotes... Help please!
If you go to the Tineye site they'll direct you to an add-on you can download for your browser. You can then search easily with the right click menu. Most browsers are supported. E.g. the Firefox one requests an optional $2 contribution for the author, seems good value to me.

Looks like I made a wrong assumption on the date..... Poscar's link provides the identical item dated as 1918 Siberian occupation, so if they have got it right then that is the one to go for.
It is a great and interesting item, I wonder what journey it has taken during its existence.
Re: Unknown banknotes... Help please!
The journey would seem to have been on a Royal Navy Ship in the pocket of a naval officer who was in that area - my husband's grandfather.
That's where almost all my odd notes & coins have come from. He would, apparently, have been delighted that his hoardings have turned into useful amounts of money.
Re: Unknown banknotes... Help please!
I can't translate the japanese, but the russian across the top is 10 cent Japanese "coin", (I would translate Монетою as coin, but it could be baknote, I suppose); and across the bottom is Imperial Japanese Government
Re: Unknown banknotes... Help please!
Thanks - we now have this note nailed - I just have to decide how best to sell it. Price is the problem if I stick it on here (which would be my first choice)
Re: Unknown banknotes... Help please!
Hi Madelaine,
Have you gotten the information on your note? The note is a 50 sen Japanese military banknote used in Manchuria in 1904. Unlike the other Japanese military banknote issued, this banknote has Russian inscription on it. Hope that helps
