disposing of old CD-Rs of data
from undergrad Uni work, I have a big box of them and I am planning on throwing a lot away as I no longer need them (from 2002-4!!!). I would like to make sure that the data on them is unrecoverable though, what is the best way to do this, as I will have probably about 200 of them going out!
Re: disposing of old CD-Rs of data
Not sure how to erase the data, though I expect breaking the CDs would work OK. :)
Best wishes for many sales to all,
Re: disposing of old CD-Rs of data
Shredders that can handle paper, credit cards AND CDs are available.
Complete destruction of the disc is the only 100% sure method of stopping a determined snooper.
Re: disposing of old CD-Rs of data
I believe a strong magnet totally corrupts all data, then the disks can bu used for various types of decor or art work
Re: disposing of old CD-Rs of data
For that many, get a shredder (ensure it is rated to cope with CDs). When you have finished...you'll have a shredder for other sensitive stuff.
Other than that, physically damage them. Don't put them in a microwave (as some people suggest). Drill, saw, abrade, break, etc. (wear gloves and eye protection). Burn. Immerse in Ketone.

CDs/DVDs do not work by magnetic field variation, they work by optical interference.

I would use an old Mircrowave and use it outside.

3 to 1 ratio of Muriatic acid and water in a five gallon bucket, soak overnight. Then add 7 more parts water and wash your driveway with the liquid.
Safety Glasses, eye, hand and arm protection will be advised along with staying away from the fumes. I have never melted that many cd's/dvd's so I'm not sure after soaking if you will end up with a massive clump of plastic or if they will liquify but they will be unreadable.
