I'm using Firefox v.3.6.25 [which only came out in December] and keep getting prompts about upgrading, but find that most of my add-ons won't work with v.9.

Seems to me that they have 2 versions running alongside each other - so do I need to upgrade?

Most extensions will actually work - they just don't announce their compatibility to Firefox.
You can disable compatibility checking in Firefox. I have done it on mine. It used to be a simple setting in Firefox - but is now more complicated.
