A
I think this is a great thread ...
IMHO a good search engine is so important for the success of an auction site.
When I first discovered eBid in December 2010, I attempted to search out some items of interest.
Surprisingly, most of my search items came up with very low, even "0" results.
From this, I mistakenly concluded that eBid had very few products on offer.
Here's some similar (current) examples:
(Searches were from Australia - taken 4th July 2011)
Search eBay for "Startrek" and you get "7,343 results found for Startrek" (all of which are shown)
Search eBay for "Star Trek" and you get "7,348 results found for Star Trek" (all of which are shown)
Search eBid for "Startrek" and you only get "found 28 auctions" (just the incorrectly spelled results are shown)
Search eBid for "Star Trek" and you get "found 2341 auctions" (this time you see what you're looking for)
This means that a searcher looking for "Startrek" will see eBay with 7,343 but eBid with just 28
Search eBay for "Vidio" and you get "Did you mean: video? (28063 items)" (plus the incorrectly spelled results are shown)
Search eBay for "Video" and you get "28065 results found for Video" (all of which are shown)
Search eBid for "Vidio" and you only get "found 11 auctions" (just the incorrectly spelled results are shown)
Search eBid for "Video" and you get "found 3786 auctions" (this time you see what you're looking for)
This means that a searcher looking for "Vidio" will see eBay with 28,063 but eBid with just 11
Search eBay for "Manecure" and you get "0 results found for Manecure, so we searched for manicure" (1,656 results)
Search eBay for "Manicure" and you get "1,656 results found for Manicure" (all of which are shown)
Search eBid for "Manecure" and you get "found 1 auction" (just the incorrectly spelled result is shown)
Search eBid for "Manicure" and you get "found 89 auctions" (this time you see what you're looking for)
This means that a searcher looking for "Manecure" will see eBay with 1,656 but eBid with just 1
So how a word is spelled and whether it includes spaces - has a HUGE bearing on the results of a search.
Such results can impact greatly on how eBid is 'perceived' by new viewers & potential members.

So true. :)
