Default Yeats to fly the Irish flag Downunder in the Cup

Yeats may return for another Cup23 Jun 2008

Irish stayer Yeats could be back for another tilt at the Emirates Melbourne Cup after winning the Ascot Gold Cup for a record-equalling third consecutive year, emulating the feat of Sagaro in 1975-77. Ridden by Johnny Murtagh, Yeats, who was 11/8 favourite, won the 2˝-mile race by a massive five lengths from Geordieland and Coastal Path.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien said after the win that Yeats was a chance of coming back to Melbourne for this year’s Cup. He finished seventh to Delta Blues in the 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup but did not return last year. Instead the stable was represented by Mahler, who was third to Efficient and Purple Moon. O’Brien said another of his runners, Septimus, could also make the trip to Melbourne for the Cup. He described the triple success of Yeats in the Ascot Gold Cup as “beyond belief”.

In his previous Ascot Gold Cup successes Yeats was ridden by Kieren Fallon in 2006 and then by Michael Kinane. The win gave Murtagh and trainer Aidan O’Brien their fourth Group 1 success at the Royal Ascot meeting, including that of former Melbourne horse Haradasun in the Queen Anne Stakes.

Talking Twin Assult from Japan on Our cup !

Japanese Duo may return for Cup.

    11 Jun 2008

Japanese duo Delta Blues and Pop Rock could return to Flemington this year for a rematch of their famous 2006 Emirates Melbourne Cup quinella.
Owner Katsumi Yoshida told Racing Victoria Ltd international scout Leigh Jordon that Delta Blues was a firm contender for the race while a decision will be made about Pop Rock once he returns from a spell.
Other Japanese owners have also expressed interest in making the trip but a stumbling block is the new quarantine protocols between Japan and Australia following the outbreak of equine influenza in Australia last year.
New conditions mean horses from Japan are required to spend six weeks in quarantine in another country before entering Australia.
Jordon said discussions had begun with the Fedceral government to ease these conditions as Japanese trainers have said they will not make the trip if they have to spend so much time in quarantine. It is understood that RVL chairman Michael Duffy and VRC chairman Rod Fitzroy have already met government officials in an effort to vary the quarantine restrictions.
Jordon said that Japan Racing Association officials were also keen to resolve any issues.

Jordon said Yoshida had indicated that Pop Rock, whose form in Japan had been superior to Delta Blues since the 2006 Melbourne Cup, and was now spelling, could also come back this year.
Jordon was in Japan for the running of the Yasuda Kinen — the final leg of the Asian Mile Series — in Tokyo last Sunday, which was won by local mare Vodka.

Default Bart Cummings the Cups King going for Cup Number 12

Bart views Cup win No. 12

    10 Jun 2008

Cups maestro Bart Cummings believes he has the right horse for a possible 12th Melbourne Cup after Viewed spread-eagled the field in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m).
Relishing the wet conditions, Viewed, $3.40 favorite, romped in by seven lengths.
While it is a big-step up for him now to tackle the Emirates Melbourne Cup in spring, Cummings said that would be the rising four-year-old’s main target.
He said that the wet conditions made the Brisbane Cup the equivalent of a 2800m race – and no-one knows better than 11-time Cup winner Cummings how to get Viewed to run out a strong 3200m at Flemington in November.
It was the third Brisbane Cup win for Cummings who took it with Fulmen in 1967 and Herminia in 1975, when it was a 3200m Group 1 event.
The Cup was reduced to Group 2 level and 2400m last year. The change in conditions cost Cummings the chance to record his 250th Group 1 win, but looking on the bright side, he quipped: "There's still plenty of time for that."
Jockey Damien Oliver, who rode Viewed, said the horse had the potential to be an Emirates Melbourne Cup contender.
