Default Warts ? Sorry but I need some advice

My old Lasa has got three big warts , one on his head and two a bit further down, the one on the top of his head is really big, but I know it isn't cancerous, problem is, it is very very unsightly, to get it removed would mean he would have to have a general anesthetic, which ain't good at his age.

Have any of you guys had an old dog with warts and put them through the surgery ?

I used to suffer from warts on my fingers. Have a word with your local pharmacy or vet - there are many non prescription treatments available.

Postcards, problem is, the one on the top of his head is really big, I doubt that any sort of pharmacy preparation will deal with it

Is it hurting him or causing him harm? Can you catch it if it stays there?

If it's just cosmetic, don't do anything, it's not going to bother him at all what he looks like, why risk it? What does your vet say?

Are they definitely warts? Has the vet verified that?

There are remedies for human warts, liquids that dry them up and make them drop off, but not sure if there are any available remedies for dogs.

    Hi Mrs M.

    Warts are a virus.

Like any other virus they usually attack when we are stressed or run down.

A good doggy multi vitamin, also as has been suggested a topical wart prep from your vet might help.
They may not remove the warts but they can shrink them.

Sometimes warts just go on there own.

Hiya guys, basically, the vet said that he didn't think the warts are cancerous and as Zak is an old dog, he didn't think it was worth putting him through a general anesthetic to remove them.

In the meantime, I have gathered up his hair in a clip to cover the worst one . <P>

My dog is 15 and fit for his age and enjoying life. He has quite a big one at the side of his moth a small one over his eye and one on his muzzle.. Our vet, an old friend too, advises us to leave well alone and they are very common in older dogs . If it is black and shiney it may well eventually just grow a little stalk and drop off on it's own accord. If it is sore, weeping and painful go back to the vet.
Unless the dog is in severe pain then it's not worth, or fair to put him though the trauma of a general anaesthetic if it is elderly
And don' t remove them yourself... it will cause more problems.
