What really makes a difference to selling or not?

Listed are a number of "elements" that I've seen offered as important factors for newbies to determine whether or not they'll make a sale here. Some I've offered myself, others I've just read. Some are contradictory, because that's how advice works. Be interesting to see which ones are most consistently believed to matter.

So, tick any you think are truly important for sellers to succeed here.

The only ones I didn't vote for were,
Offer free postage as this effected my sales in my early days
Have some feedback as that has never been a problem for me and getting sales
Don't underprice items as never knowing done so

I voted for both descriptions as it depends on type of item I am listing

I was going to put "have the right product" but you can only have 20 items in a poll, and that one got bumped for being less likely to be debated.

If "have the right product" had been on there, that would have been the fourth one I'd have ticked

Without going back to study my sold items, it seems like my sales have been mainly people who bought of me in the YDC and added a thing or two, or people who have found the item on Google and are never seen again. Offering the international sales option has been important for us here; we sell more items on our regular website but have only attracted domestic buyers there. Here, our regular website stuff has mainly gone overseas and our odds and sods have stayed stateside.

Edited to add......I only ticked the ones that I know have contributed to sales or serious inquiries, rather than the ones that seem to matter to me but which buyers have not commented on.

I've voted for what I think, I'm a fairly new seller here so haven't had a lot of sales yet but I've read lots of advice on the forums and based my answers on what I think should work.

They're all good, legitimate reasons. I restrained myself to voting for six: don't inflate postage; DO sell overseas*; offer paypal; have an auction start price; use By It Now to get onto Google; and give a detailed description.

Among my six picks, I think using PayPal and giving a detailed description are most important.

*It has disappointed me quite a few times to find items I'm interested in that the seller doesn't want to ship to the U.S. Their choice but a disappointment here.

that works both ways texas.... I've seen things on the US site but the seller wont ship here

I always like the questions about selling overseas - makes me chuckle - I have sold only two items to buyers in France and ALL the rest have gone overseas to UK, USA, Australia, Spain (well that's not actually overseas for me!) and New Zealand!
