Default Google Mail & Gmail - Are they the same?

Hi, I am looking for a new e-mail supplier, and after asking here sometime ago was recommended to Google's products.

Having had a look at them, there are 2 separate mailing systems that both seem to have connections to google - google mail and gmail.

Can anyone tell me which is best and are they both google? Thanks

    They are both google.

In fact, my address ends in googlemail.com

but you can still send me email at gmail.com and the mail ends up in my googlemail inbox

To confirm Google Mail and Gmail are part of google, you just choose what type of email provider you want. I've got Gmail through google yet the email address say's googlemail for sales

Thanks both - that is weird. Why have 2 names for the same product? When I saw both were google connected I had thought that one was an earlier version and in the process of being phased out.

This is a situation where there is a certain irony in suggesting that people Google for the information, but...

The domain gmail.com is unavailable in certain countries, such as the United Kingdom and Germany, due to trademark disputes, in which cases users must use the domain googlemail.com.[30]
Because the domains are interchangeable, users obliged to use the googlemail.com domain are unable to select addresses already chosen by gmail.com users. Inbound e-mails sent to either googlemail.com or gmail.com addresses will reach the user. When registering for an online service, Googlemail users must use the googlemail.com form of their email address to ensure that any administrative emails they send to the service, such as confirmation messages, are recognized.

The one thing that anoys me is long email addresses.
    gmail.com is short and simple
googlemail.com or btinternet.com take so long to right out,
and then you have to confirm it again.

Such a pain in the neck.

Hi Folks, thanks for the help. I have more questions though.

    1) Is it possible to have different separate passwords for the different elements of google. For instance I would prefer to keep my google checkout separate from the googlemail, to increase security.

    2) Are you allowed to have more than one e-mail account. On my current e-mail setup I have 3 accounts. One for normal stuff and also accounts for my selling on here and job search, (the last one generates a large amount of messages, because of useless search engines.

    Thanks

    1. Your other functions are grouped together under your main email, as far as I can see. One log on does the lot. I don't know, off the top of my head, if there's way of hiving parts off, as I've never wanted to.

    2. I have more than one google mail account, but as above one is my "main" account through which I access all the other google services.
