Default Reception rooms? Question for our British friends.

I was watching a British show on TV last night. It was called Location Location Location. It was about people buying homes in the UK.

The couples had various requirements for the houses that they wanted. One of these requirements was for the home to have 2 or 3 "reception rooms". I think that reception rooms are what we call living rooms or family rooms here. Is this correct?

An other question that I have is, is it normal to have 2 or 3 reception rooms in a house? If it is what do you use these rooms for? I don't understand why you would have 3 living rooms in a house? These houses that they were looking at were in the 650,000 to 1,000,000 pound range. Expensive buy east cost Canadian standards. I am not sure if that is expensive in Brittan. They were large homes in the country or in small villages. Not in big cities anyway. Is it just in the expensive homes that they have 3 reception rooms?

Just wondering. My grand parents were from England but they are gone now and I never really got to know them as we were always living far away from them , So I can't ask them.

As I get older, I get more interested in England and tracing my ancestry there. Some day I would like to visit and check out the part of the county where they lived. But that will be down the road if and when I can afford to go.

One last thing. I have heard that when you sell a house in England, you sell the furniture in it as well. Have I been feed a story?
    Thanks for your time!

You are quite correct about reception rooms...they can also be dining rooms.

NO it is not normal to have 3 reception rooms lol. Only the big houses have that luxury. Quite why you need 3 reception rooms is beyond me.
In the old days there used to be the front parlour which was kept exclusively for "best" and not used very often.
The prices you saw are not for ordinary family homes.
Way out of my price range anyway.

If you rent a house it can come furnished but most people take their furniture with them when they sell their property.
Looks like you have been fed a story

    Yes your right,

I only have a living room , where as my sister had 2 but turned the second one into the dinning room, suppose its what people like, I dont really understand why they want that many reception rooms, me i'd hate a big house, cost an arm and a leg to run it lol,

The area you buy your house will also reflect on the price

google houses for sale in uk and take a sneaky peak at what you can get at what price, also check out various locations and see price differences

No although if you do not want to take furnishing you may sell furnishing with the home and add it into the price

furnishing i mean white goods, some people will leave carperting others will want to take it

it's entirely up to you and the buyer, as some buyers will have or want there own stuff

The majority of properties have one reception room (lounge) and a separate dining room that can also be classed as a reception room.
"posh" houses, the higher priced ranges, will have more than 2 rececption rooms.
Most people that sell their homes take their furniture with them. Some people do negotiate items of furniture to purchase separately and not within the house purchase price.
