    Default No Soliciting

What does 'No Soliciting' mean to you?

I was looking for a 'S*d Off' sign for the front door and the only decent one I could find here had that phrase on it. To me it hints at referring to prostitution. Does it to others or is my in-built lexicon on the fritz?

Good question. I suppose in a court of law, "soliciting" refers to a professional sex provider seeking employment but a "No Soliciting" sign on your door means "no sales pitches allowed here", meaning Girl Scout cookies, religious proselytizing, cleaning products and everything else people try to sell you at your home. So if I came to your door and saw a "No soliciting" sign, I wouldn't feel insulted and I would not attempt to get money from you.

Having a front door nobody can find is useful too. :-)

    slightly off thread!
the one that gets me is how so many trades now have CLIENTS instead of customers! now that is one that makes me think of escorts and the like -

I tend to use client in any situation where a service rather than a product is supplied. I can't help it if you have a one track mind about what constitutes a service. ;o)

Borders and I clearly move in different (aka lower) circles of society to everyone else. ;-)

I am well aware of the book definitions of 'soliciting' - it's which meaning first springs to mind on seeing the word. To me it's the prostitution connotation.

In the betting office trade customers are refered to as clients.

    Are solicitors guilty of soliciting?
