I am well aware of the book definitions of 'soliciting' - it's which meaning first springs to mind on seeing the word. To me it's the prostitution connotation.
Depends on the context. Just asked here, out of any particular setting, "what does soliciting mean?" probably hookers would spring to my mind (however briefly!) but if I saw it on a sign, or even if you said "no soliciting" the context would alter and I'd think of brush salesmen. Also fairly briefly. :-)

I agree, Astral. Not a good choice of words.
My neighbour has a sign in her window which - to paraphrase - says "No salesmen....." Without going to look in her window I can't be sure of the wording. I do know, however, that she obtained it from the council.

Saw quite a good one recently:

    NO COLD CALLERS
I will not buy your goods.
I do not need your advice.
I do not want your religion.
Do not waste both of our time.

I like that one - yep.

I find just not answering the door works.

If I don't know someone is coming around then I generally haven't got the time or inclination to see them. Unsociable I know but I think a phone call is easier to make if somebody just wants to tell me something.

Can't stand it when someone just pops in for a cup of coffee because they were driving near me. It seems to happen when just got out of shower, started a project, am supposed to be working, no make-up on AARGH!

We used to have a ton of them in our neighborhood. Now we have a warnig system in place. If they come to me first (I am the first house on the block so I am usually first one they hit) I call the neighbor and she in turn calls the next one on the list and they meet with a lot of no answers. Works great for us. Message in our neck of the woods is "The Jehovahs are coming.
The Jehovahs are coming." I do not mean to offend anyone with this response, but I don't knock on your door pushing my church's doctrine and I expect the same courtesy.

I am going to print off this sign for all my neighbors and then we can put the call system out of business. Thanks so much, Granny P.S. I still want to push the button!!!!

The electrically-live metal bell push on my door bell does it for me - no need for signs!

So, Kim, are you saying that you service your clients?

No, but you appear to be thinking it. [wanders off to see if bromide is listed on eBid....]

And would she say "That's it!" at the end? ;-)
