just been readin how 866 members of 1st Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment, who fought off 27,000 Chinese in 1951 in the korean war

It was one of warfare's most heroic stands, yet today the war - let alone the battle - rarely features in school history lessons etc

It is no longer PC to be proud of Britain's (particularly England's) history. Not long ago most councils would tear down the flag of St George if you had the temerity to put one up.

In the U.S. the government has a great deal to say what goes into our history books. Columbus is never brought up as the man who introduced slavery to the New World. The Korean War is skipped over lightly. Not much attention given to Vietnam. On and on.

I dropped history, or rather I forged a letter from my mum Only interesting bit was when I got to interview a company on the local Industrial Estate about their history and write a report on it, the rest was Arab/Israeli conflict and that was pre Gulf War

    Hey JD .How are you?

I agree. I stood in for a term years ago to teach GCSE History. We "Did" the IRA. It was the new fangled National Curriculum and we were instructed to use certain books and a certain method of teaching "evidence" rather than the actual reasons behind the troubles in Northern ireland.
Our kids know more about the Romans & ancient Egyptians than how England's mix of cultures and languages shaped the England we live in today. I am talking England as the Welsh, Irish and Scots have their own perspectives.

Mix of cultures? Not the Asian cultures that are now becoming part of our Modern History... but the Celts, Angles, Saxons, Danes, Vikings and of course the Normans who turned most of our good old English anglo-saxon words into unacceptable and coarse swear words. This was because the Normans were of course conquerors and therefore became posh elitists! The poor old down trodden English peasants did not speak French so they were told to keep their place and became serfs.........

Here endeth the lesson........ History tends to repeat itself........
    Frightening thought!!!

I thought it was because the US went on a run of turning all of the famous landmark moments in British history into Americanised blockbuster films
Just realised i needed to mod my old signature. No set categories yet, but i'll work on that now i am back and update as able

The point is that in 3 or 4 years of school history periods, they cannot teach the whole world history, or the whole of British history.

What they do is choose some period to study to show students how to study history.

    Its the same with geography,

But I agree there are some great moments in British history.

I would have thought it would have a positive effect on the morale of a nation for it's children to learn of their own history...maybe that's just me
