If read that somebody I was thinking of employing had shown this much enthusiasm, passion, and initiative, I wouldn't count it against them!

That's a shame but don't let it get you down. Just get the next one that comes along. Sometimes the next one proves to be better anyway.

I've never known anything like it, came back to work (the interview was at another site up the road), walked into the call centre office and literally the boos and groans that echoed up and down the floor when people found out i'd been knocked back again..........

Ask them to tell you why. If you're turned down once, it's cheeky, but if it keeps happening it's reasonable to ask where the gaps are in your CV so you can set about plugging them. If you put it in a positive way like that (rather than ask who doesn't like you!?) you might get some useful feedback.
