Unless you're passionate about brown bread, you'll probably find white easier to start with. It's much more likely to rise well and produce good results. Brown can be quite heavy if you're not used to it. I make both, and half-and-half and all sorts. Welcome to the club, I'm sure you won't regret it.
lol I have an excuse mentioning, my oven, it's new so i have to rave about it as i so love it ....at the mo...........give it time

ok will try the white bread first

I know they are changing stores around, they are getting rid of of the the chicken and pie counter and just selling bagged cooked chickens

    Bravo!

Was the dough quite wet? Your bread has some fairly large and irregular holes, normally a feature of wettish doughs such as focaccias.

Hope it tastes as good as it looks!

I'm far (very far) from being an expert, so I'm not sure what causes which problem... but I'd suspect a lack of rise like that is going to be about the kneading and rising. Do you make by hand or machine?

By hand Kim and I do knead it well and thump it down and then knead it again, maybe it's just too heavy for me, Mike thinks it's great.

If you trust his judgement and don't think he's just being polite (or likes concrete!) then yes, it's probably a matter of taste and preferences.
