They vary - I totally agree with you about many of the non-fiction ones, Astral, but my sons had enormous value out of "Little Story Teller" which was a book & story tape. It came out fortnightly and the spacing out made the arrival very exciting. For years afterwards I would lend the box of cassettes to mothers with sick children - hours of entertainment to keep them from being fretful while stuck in bed.

That happened to my daughter, who was collecting pocket watches, the mag folded after 2 issues but she got the last issue plus 2 watches free.

I bought Story Teller for my daughter many years ago, which she used to love.
. A few years ago i dug them out of the loft, and sold them on ebay for over £100.00, so we both benefited from them

Midden - a dump, usually for domestic waste. Archealogists dig up middens around castles. Old farm often have a large hill behind them where the people would toss the old chicken bones, broken plates, old fence posts...whatever they didn't want, before the days of ultra efficient garbage pick up services.................
