Thread: Is anyone daft enough...

Yes, I subscribed to an Art course for my teenage daughter.
I cannot remember how many issues I had, like Penni I think it was over two years subscription.
Teagan loved it, and read every issue with great interest.
(There was a wooden carry case and oil, acrylic paints to collect, along with brushes etc)
I think it was life changing - because she always said that she wanted to be an Entomologist - then suddenly turned to art.
She has two degrees in Art and Animation, her work has been shown in USA with great acclaim.
She is presently freelance, because of new baby, but maybe later taking up a post at Staffs Uni as lecturer. (She already does it part-time)
I would love to think that all her success is down to the Art Course mags - so I sure am glad that I forked out a few quid then.

There's one being advertised at present - a Star Wars chess set in 32 parts. At 7.99 GBP per week that means the chess set is going to cost you just over 255.00 GBP (not sure if the board is included).

All these seem a total rip-off, with the end product being worth far less than you have to lay out.

Plus, what happens if the company vanishes part way through the series?

Plus, if I wanted to build something I wouldn't want it to take the best part of a year to do it.

Seems like total madness to me.
    obivously sum do

    Guilty
I bought the "Treasures of the Earth" collection of minerals/gem stones & magazines some years back.
Took about a year to get & I'm not game to add up what it cost me.
Good info in the mags, but the specimens were not up to much - OK for kids.
Guess I'm just a big kid.

    Hi there Oldandintheway (I'm sure you're not...lol!)
I had something very similar for our kids many years ago.
We had samples of gemstones every so often with an issue that told all about the history of the stones and minerals.
I thought it was fascinating - and purchased a stone tumbling machine that polished the stones.
The kids were fascinated, and we made earrings, bracelets and pendants.
Son(only) Dominic wasn't too keen on the earrings though ....

I started the teddy bear collection about 10yrs ago that went on for 2yrs. The were about a foot high and dressed up and really cute. They were all named too, Gordon the Golfer, Alfonso the Artist, Pete the Pilot etc. After I got to about 14, the boyfriend said 'you're not collecting all 52 are you?'.

    Needless to say I didn't...

Hi Trish, plenty would disagree with you - big kid wise.
Sounds like you had the rock bug there for a while. (I've got it bad)
I don't doubt your son wasn't keen on the earrings - guess he didn't want his name changed to Dominica.

Thing is with many of these, is that you could buy a far better book on a subject for far less money, and it would likely be much better content than the magazine. Even a college course could cost you less and give you more.

Good that some see value in what they paid out - just can't see it myself.
