    REVELATION 14

    Revelation 14:1-5
1 Then I saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads.

2 And I heard a sound from heaven like the roaring of a great waterfall or the rolling of mighty thunder. It was like the sound of many harpist playing together.

3 This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders. And no one could learn this song except those 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

4 For they are spiritually undefiled, pure as virgins, following the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among the people on the earth as a special offering to God and to the Lamb.

5 No falsehood can be charged against them; they are blameless. [NIV]

There has been much debate about the 144,000. Who are they? Are they a select remnant from the 12 tribes of Israel, or are they a select group from among the Church? What was their role?

There have been many suggestions as to who the 144,000 are; some say from the 12 Tribes of Israel, some say from the Church, the Jehovah Witnesses say it is from them, and their are more groups who claim the same.

The 144,000 were mentioned first in Revelation 7:1-8. They were listed as being from the 12 Tribes of Israel. Some consider this literally the 12 Tribes of Israel, and others consider this spiritual Israel (the Church). Four angels were instructed not to hurt land, sea, or trees until the 144,000 were marked in their forehead with the seal of God (name of the Lamb and name of the Father). [Rev. 7:3-4, 14:1] We are told that after this a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language were standing before the throne of God in heaven. This great multitude were described as those coming out of great tribulation. [Rev. 7:9-17]

This scene occurred before the breaking of the seventh seal in Revelation 8. The 144,000 played an evangelistic role during the Tribulation Period. The sealing of the 144,000 was done to identify them with God, and provide them with protection to complete their end-time ministry. The great multitude, were evangelized by the 144,000; and were martyred as a result of turning to Jesus Christ. The 144,000 would also be martyred for their faith and testimony at the completion of their ministry on earth.

In Revelation 14, the Lamb (Jesus Christ) is seen standing on Mount Zion accompanied by the 144,000. There is a wonderful new song being sung from heaven. No one was able to learn the song except the 144,000. This is a select group of saints, redeemed from among the people of earth as a special offering to God and the Lamb (Rev.14:4). They are described as being undefiled, pure as virgins, having no falsehood, blameless. [Rev. 14:4-5]

The second mention of the 144,000 occurs here in the 14th chapter of Revelation. Some have questioned if this is the same group of 144,000 mentioned in the 7th chapter of Revelation. The Bible does not state that this is a different group. The passages of scripture from chapters 7 and 14 appear to be speaking of the same group. The 144,000 here were redeemed from the earth. Their role in Revelation 14 is not evangelistic; but a select heavenly host accompanying Jesus Christ on Mount Zion.

As far as who the 144,000 are? They could be considered as both/either a select remnant belonging to Jesus Christ, from the 12 Tribes of Israel; and/or a select group from among the Universal Church (the Body of Believers). An individual who is Jewish by birth, religion, and culturally; is still considered Jewish, after accepting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Examples of such groups include Jews For Christ. The great multitude was described as being from every nation, tribe, people, and language. Absolutely no group was left out in this description.

    REVELATION 14
    (Continued)

In Revelation chapter 14 there is angelic intervention with humanity in the presentation of the gospel, and in the end time harvesting of the earth. Three angels were involved in evangelism on earth, two in the ingathering of the end time saints, and two angels were involved in executing the wrath of God.

Throughout Revelation we saw the Church, and also God's designated agents of evangelism on earth, during the last 7 years, or the Tribulation Period. The 7 churches (the Universal Church) was the focus of Revelation chapters 1-3. There was no more mention of the Church again until Revelation chapter 22. Many hold the view that the Church will be raptured at some point, either before the Tribulation Period or during the first half of the period.

The 144,000 received the seal of God in their foreheads in Revelation chapter 7, and will be instrumental in evangelizing multitudes worldwide. They will be martyred at some point during the Tribulation Period. Following their ministry to the inhabitants of earth, the Two Witnesses will prophesy to mankind and cause many plagues. Following their death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven, the seventh trumpet will sound, signaling the second half of the Tribulation Period.

The evangelistic agents of Revelation after the Two Witnesses are removed from the earth will be angels. The 144,000 appear in Revelation 14 but not in an evangelistic role. They are shown with the Lamb (Jesus Christ) on Mount Zion (heavenly Jerusalem).

    Revelation 14:6-12
............another angel flying in midair......had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on earth-- to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgement has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water."

A second angel followed and said, "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries."

A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: If anyone worships the beast and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.......There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name. This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus. [NIV]

I too am enjoying this thread. I am beginning to understand how significant the Old Testament is - I have tended not to view it as too important. Keep up the good work, please.

    Thank you for your comments.

I love the Old Testament because it lays such a beautiful foundation for the New Testament. The Book of Genesis contains all the major foundational principles of the Bible; and the Book of Revelation sums up God's entire dealings with mankind, and His plan for the redemption of man and the earth.

    REVELATION 14
    (Continued)

Revelation 14:12-13 This calls for the patient endurance of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus. Then I heard a voice from heaven say, "Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. "Yes," says the Spirit, "they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them." [NIV]

What is the writer referring to by this? This, refers to the necessity to resist the mark of the beast. Revelation 14:11 indicates that all who worship the beast or receive his mark are doomed to eternal torment. To resist the mark of the beast will not be easy, as without it, it will be impossible to buy or sell anything. This would include vital commodities such as food, water, clothing, shelter, medications, and needed services. To resist the mark of the beast will result in great suffering and the threat of death.

This resistance will only be possible through the encouragement of God's Spirit, who produces the fruit of patience and endurance, in the saints of God. Those who resist the mark of the beast, and patiently endure the suffering and martyrdom, are promised to be blessed. This is the blessing of the second beatitude (Matthew 5:4). The Spirit of God joins in agreement with the heavenly voice, further encouraing the saints during their persecution.

The overcomers are also promised the gift of rest in the Lord, and heavenly rewards for their good deeds. This Sabbath-rest is promised for the people of God. [Hebrews 4:1-11]

    REVELATION 14
    (Continued)

Revelation 14:14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. [KJV]

Revelation 14:14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one "like a son of man" with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. [NIV]

There are differences of opinion concerning the interpretation of the 14th verse; this is seen in part when reading it in the above two versions. Many interpret the one sitting on the cloud as representative of Christ returning for the ingathering of the saints. Others have interpreted this verse to be speaking of "a type of Christ" or "a foreshadow of Christ" symbolizing his coming return.

The term cloud has great importance in both the New and the Old Testaments. The LORD led Israel during their wilderness travels by a cloud by day and by a pillar of fire by night. [Exodus 13:21]

Daniel described in his vision........."The Son of man" [KJV] / "like a son of man" [NIV]......coming with the clouds of heaven. [Daniel 7:13] Daniel appears to be speaking of Jesus Christ in Daniel 7:13-14.

Jesus stated, "At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." [Luke 21:27 NIV]

Two angels told the followers of Jesus that as he went up in a cloud, he would return in a cloud. [Acts 1:9-11]

The one on the cloud has a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. The crown here is a victors wreath. When Jesus Christ appears in the sky in full power and glory, he is described as having "many crowns on his head" [Rev. 19:12] For He is "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS" [Revelation 19:16]

There are some who view the one on the cloud in Rev. 14:14, as possibly an angel of God, foreshadowing the coming of Christ. As was seen, God led Israel in a cloud by day and fire by night. The seventh angel was in charge of the fire. [Rev. 14:18]

The first three angels in Revelation 14 carried the eternal gospel to earth's inhabitants, during the second half of the Tribulation Period. [Rev. 14:6-13]. The one on the cloud, possibly a fourth angel, foreshadowing the return of Christ, for the ingathering of the end time saints. [Rev. 14:14]. The fifth angel called to the one on the cloud........"Take your sickle and reap.....for the harvest of the earth is ripe." [Rev. 14:15-16]. The sixth angel also had a sharp sickle. [Rev. 14:17]. The seventh angel that is in charge of fire, called to the sixth angel with the other sharp sickle. He told him to take his sharp sickle and reap the harvest of grapes because they are ripe. [Rev.14:18]. The sixth angel swung his sickle to the earth, gathered the grapes and threw them into the winepress of God's wrath. The blood flowed as high as the horses bridle and for 180 miles (about 300 kilometers). [Rev. 14:19-20]

Jesus told a parable of a man who sewed good seed, but weeds came up among the wheat. The man instructed his harvesters to..."Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn." [Matthew 13:24-30 NIV]

    REVELATION 15

Revelation 15:1 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign: seven angels with the seven last plagues -- last, because with them God's wrath is completed. [NIV]

John is reporting what he is witnessing in the heavenly realm. The entire 15th chapter of Revelation is an introduction of the last three series of sevenfold judgements. Revelation 16 delineates the seven bowls (seven last plagues) of God's wrath, and the response to these plagues by the inhabitants of earth.

There is frequent use of the number 7 throughout the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation. The number 7 is considered a holy number, and designates completion. Genesis 2:2 indicated that........"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work." [NIV]

His work was the creation of earth; the completion of creative activity. The foundational concepts of divine completion or wholeness, work, and rest, are identified in the second chapter of Genesis.

The number seven and sevenfold sets of seven are used frequently throughout Revelation.

*Seven Churches (Rev. 1-3) - 7 churches on the Roman Province of Asia; symbolizing Universal Church(Body of Believers)

*Seven Seals (Rev. 5-6; 8:1-2) - first sevenfold series of God's wrath (plagues) occuring 1st half of Tribulation Period

*Seven Trumpets (Rev. 8-9; 11:15 - second sevenfold series of God's wrath (plagues) occuring 1st half of Tribulation to midpoint of the Tribulation Period.

*Seven Bowls (Revelation 15-16) - third (last) sevenfold series of God's wrath (plagues) occuring 2nd half of Tribulation Period

As was noted in Revelation chapter 14, the end-time ministry activity of seven angels was seen. These angels were not specifically designated as being sevenfold, but there appeared to be seven angels involved. [See Below]

[Rev. 14:19-20]

Revelation 15:1 clearly demonstrates that the number 7 correlates to the concept of completion. There were 7 angels, with the last 7 plagues, because with them God's wrath is completed.

    REVELATION 15
    (Continued)

Revelation 15:2-4 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. [KJV]

    (3) And they were singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:

"Great and marvelous are your actions, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations. (4) Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name. For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous deeds have been revealed." [NIV]

John continues to report on the great and marvelous things he is seeing in heaven. He had seen the seven angels with the seven last plagues; and now he is seeing those who had died for their faith standing on what seemed to be a sea of glass mixed with fire. A chrystal clear sea of glass was described to be before the throne of God. This sea of glass is mixed with fire. Fire is used to express judgement and the fury of God. Fire is also a purifying agent. God's wrath was kindled over the martyrdom of the saints.

Those standing on the glass sea were described as being victorious.......over the beast, his image, his mark, and the number of his name. They had chosen to remain faithful to Jesus Christ, and refused to worship the beast, his image or accept his mark. These died victoriously in Christ. The Scriptures spoke of these martyred saints saying....."Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on.....for they will rest from all their toils and trials; for their good deeds follow them." [Rev 14:13 NIV]

They were given the harps of God, and they stood before the throne of God, singing the song of Moses and the Lamb. John was absolutely in awe at the things he witnessed in heaven.

    REVELATION 15
    (Continued)

Revelation 15:5-8 (5)Then I looked and saw the Temple in heaven, God's Tabernacle, was thrown wide open!

    (6) The seven angels who were holding the bowls of the seven plagues came from the Temple, clothed in spotless white linen with gold belts across their chests.

    (7) And one of the four living beings handed each of the seven angels a gold bowl filled with the terrible wrath of God, who lives forever and forever.

    (8) The Temple was filled with smoke from God's glory and power. No one could enter the Temple until the seven angels had completed pouring out the seven plagues. [NIV]

John's attention shifts again to events that are occurring in heaven. He is writing about events that are occuring at God's Temple, the Tabernacle, with the Arc of the Covenant in heaven. The preparations for, and building of, the first earthly Tabernacle, under the leadership of Moses, is outlined in Exodus 25-31, 35-40.

The Tabernacle in heaven was wide open and John wrote the events that were occurring within the Tabernacle. The seven angels who were given the charge of pouring the last seven plagues on earth, were seen coming from the Temple. One of the four living beings (special and powerful angelic beings, cherubim), handed each of the seven angels a gold bowl, filled with God's wrath. God, who is eternal, is described here as living forever and ever.

The Temple was filled with the glory and power of God. No one could enter the Temple..........

When the Tabernacle was completed in Exodus 40:34, the LORD's glory filled it, and Moses was unable to enter the Tabernacle, because of God's awesome presence. [Exodus 40:34-35] After Solomon had made preparations for the building of the first non-portable Temple, and the Temple was completed [I Kings 5-8]; the priests were unable to continue their work, because the glory of God filled the Temple. [I Kings 8:10]

The Temple in heaven, was filled with the glory and power of God. No one could enter the Temple until the seven angels had completed pouring out the seven plagues. [Revelation 15:8] The angels had to bring to completion the full wrath of God.

    SUMMARY COMMENTS ON END-TIME MINISTRY
MARTYRDOM OF SAINTS & HARVESTING OF SAINTS

    REVELATION 6:9-11------ REVELATION 15

End time ministry, that occuring during the Tribulation Period, the last seven years of the end of the age, during Daniel's 70th week. This ministry was attributed to the 144,000, the Two Witnesses, and the Three Angels. The Church is not mentioned among the end time agents of evangelism. Many are of the opinion that the Church has been raptured either before the Tribulation Period started or during the first half of the period. There are others that hold the opinion that the Church will go through much of the Tribulation Period. Matthew 24 gives a comprehensive description of end time events explained by Jesus. Many of the issues addressed by Jesus in Matthew 24 are also mentioned in Revelation. Jesus emphasized that the day and hour of his return was unknown, and to watch, pray, and be ready.

During the first half of the Tribulation Period, martyred saints were pictured as being under the alter, after the 5th seal was opened by the Lamb. (Revelation 6:9-11) These saints asked God, "how long until our blood is avenged?" They were told until the number of their brothers who were to be killed as they were was completed.

The ministry agents during the first half of the Tribulation were the 144,000 who were sealed and set apart by God. (Rev. 7:1-8) A multitude of martyred saints is mentioned again in Revelation 7:9-17, after the 144,000 were sealed. They are described as standing before the Lamb and the throne of God. (Rev. 7:9, 13-14).

Sometime during the first half to the mid-point of the Tribulation Period, the Two Witnesses were ministry agents. (Rev. 11:1-14). Following the completion of their ministry to earth's inhabitants, their death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven; the second half of the Tribulation began. This will occur just before the sounding of the seventh trumpet. (Rev. 11:15)

During the second half of the Tribulation Period the beast will be given authority over all inhabitants of the earth. Suffering and martyred saints will be encouraged to endure patiently. (Rev. 13:5-10) Three angels will be the ministry agents during the second half of the Tribulation. (Rev.14:6-13)

Martyred saints are once again pictured, this time standing on what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire. They were described as being victorious over the beast, his image, and the number of his name. They had remained faithful to the LORD, and endured patiently.(Rev.15:2-4)
