This link gives a fairly balanced account of RM profits:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15820647

Basically, whilst RM makes a loss on its core business of delivering letters, it still made an operating profit of £67m for the 6 months to last September.

"Royal Mail made an exceptional gain of £190m from property sales, much of which came from the sale of its Rathbone Place depot in London"

That would go along way to help !!

The operating profit of £67m would exclude that gain, the overall profit of 187m would include such exceptional items.

Not really. That was a penny post within certain very limited areas. The penny post covering the whole country wasn't introduced until much much later, 1840.

Which I think is very relevant, because Royal Mail is obliged to offer the service regardless of whether you're sending to the next village or from Land's End to John O'Groats. RM can't cream off the business it likes, the way the courier companies do, with exclusions or price hikes for "Highlands and Islands".

Not that I hold any brief for RM. I think these price hikes at a time when we're all tightening our belts are obscene.
