Thread: HOpefully someone can explain this

  1. #1

Default HOpefully someone can explain this

Just been reading the updates in the newsletter.

One of them is raising a bit of concern with me.

''Longer login lengths options to the login form''.

One of the options is ''forever''.

When looking at any items, I always check for the last time the seller logged in.

As sellers can now log in forever - will this now show that they are logged at the time I look at an item?
Or will the last time they logged in always show today's date for example, (if they manually logged in today, and ticked the ''forever'' box).

Raising a great deal of concern with me. I thought we generally advised newbies to check the last time the seller signed in as an indication of the "dump and run" brigade... now it seems "forever" is OK! I don't understand it...

    Good question!

It crossed my mind when I read it as well. Seemed like a backward step.

I logged in 'Forever' yesterday to see what happened to the Last Seen date. Indications, so far, are that it is now redundant.

I can't see where this change came from. What was wrong with people logging in every 24 hours?

Guess there is no way now of checking when a seller last logged in.

Only way appears to be via the ask seller a question button.

    Nah - no thanks.

I'm wondering if there's some weird techy problem they've had in the background, and they've come up with this way of fixing it without thinking through the implications. Seems like a Biiiiiig backwards step to me. Quite a few of us have put in requests over the years to have logging in made more rigorous, with listings being removed for absent sellers - that would seem to be impossible with this new arrangement.

I'm so glad you mentioned this Magz my jaw hit the ground when I saw that yesterday. I couldn't believe what I was seeing !

How many years now have we been asking for log in proceedure to be tightened up to try and stop the dump and run brigade ? I for one would love an explaination from management on the wisdom behind this.

.... walks away shaking head in disbelief !

I remember the various threads about ''dump n run'' sellers/listings etc.

I seem to recall it finished with something about ebid agreed they going to delete listings after a reasonable amount of time had passed without a seller signing in.
Obviously ebid dont want to delete listings, so allowing sellers to sign in for ''forever'' appears to me to be a bit of a ''get out clause'' to avoid deleting listings.

I hope my assumption is wrong - but if not, it is a bad bad move for the site in my opinion.

"Signing in forever" only applies to the seller, he doesn't have to tick the little "24 hours login" box anymore.
Everytime a seller opens ebid he actually logs in automatically and this is put in the ebay database.
After an X time of inactivity (may still be 24 hours but is most likely shorter) he is logged out.
So...you are not signed in forever, only looks like that.

Have you tested that theory and seen your last log in date change, because it appears to contradict Magz' experience? Ta.
