    Default Hosepipe bans

Many UK water suppliers are introducing hosepipe bans this Thursday. My supplier is supposed to be one of them. However, I have not had any notification from them that it is so, how long it is for, and what the restrictions are (I assume I would be allowed to use one to put out a fire). Surely they should have to give that information. They know where to contact me - as their bills always get to me OK.

Just how are you supposed to know if a ban exists and what it entails?

Hose Pipe - Garden hose. the plastic / rubber thing that you can attach to a water outlet and use to water your garden. Or it may have a sprinkler at the end
Astral, I have asked myself the same question. I believe they think everyone watches TV, listens to the news on the radio or reads a paper. I seldom do any of it so could plead ignorance

hose pipe ban mainly entails not using for watering garden / plants , we have water butts all around garden some small some very large depending on what is planted and how much water needed , you can use hose pipe for fires , if needed but if only small fire water butts come in handy like when neighbour decided to put bbq next to our wooden fencing panel , the nice dirty water managed to splash over the panel , no idea how that happened lol

Fortunately I live in the Portsmouth Water area and we don't have a ban ... yet! However when Thames Water are losing over ¼ of their water (665 MILLION(!) litres a day!!) it is easy to see why customers are angry and many will risk ignoring the ban. The total lost by all companies by leakage is reported to be 1.2 TRILLION litres p.a. (see http://www.metro.co.uk/news/894896-t...e-hosepipe-ban)

Until the Water Companies actually start to invest (instead of paying bonuses and dividends) in leak prevention, they're not going to get the public on-side with their entreaties to use less water!

we are quite lucky up here , plenty of water , but as you say , if the water companies did what they should , fix all the leaks... there MIGHT , not be any need for these bans...the government is quick enough to tell joe public what to do , they should tell the water companies what to do also......papa.

For the ingenious there is also gravity and redundant guttering. Just put your grey matter to work for a while, there are numerous ways to get to the top of a mountain!!

I suppose I could fill my little pool with sand and build sandcastles.
