Sweepstake on YDC winner - an extra fund raiser?!

Hello everyone,
I wonder if there isn't a way to increase the fund raising of the YDC auctions... could we somehow have sweepstake, or a side betting system of some kind, on the wining item?!

(My money would go in the playboy passport holder this month!),

Would any more experienced YDCer have an idea how this might work?!

Sorry Jo, I can't agree here.

FUNdraising should be fun, as in 'auctions'. Starting a sweepstake/side betting is not for me.

If you wish to raise more on your items in YDC then try listing at a higher price.

I don't want to win the YDC but I do list at a starting price I think each item deserves.

I was looking through the YDC 99 auctions and trying to predict with my husband which item might win the YDC competition - ie sell for the most.
My bet would be - this month - that the playboy passport holder (listed by sucadot) might be the winner.

This set us to wondering whether or not there might be a way of raising further money for the chosen charity via some sort of system of predicting the winner each month...

Probably not a goer - but we were just wondering aloud!

I applaud the effort to raise more cash but I don't think this will work. A sweepstake means assigning a "runner" by draw to all the people taking part, there's no element of choice. So you'd need to wait until every item was listed so you had the full selection, and there can be hundreds - then split them between the (possibly tiny) handful of people wishing to join in. It would all be rather cumbersome. If you did it by first come first served and let people *choose* - well, quite often it's fairly predictable, so as soon as somebody bagsies the obvious winner there's no point in anybody else playing. If you tried to run it as a proper book with odds etc it would be illegal I suspect! Whatever method you attempted, it sounds like a heck of a lot of work for not enough return. Unless you've got a better plan I haven't thought of, of course.
