Royal Mail Delivery To A Neighbour Opt Out Scheme !!!

Do I understand the opt out process correctly.

a) you tell the Royal Mail you wish to opt out of the service using their web site.
b) They send you a sign to that effect.
c) you stick it on, or very near your letter box.

But and this is where I see big big problems.

If the sign is not displayed, or the postman says "he did not see it" the Royal Mail states that they have right to deliver it to a neighbour.

Please tell me I am wrong.

Sadly thats right, they have the "right" to leave it where they want if they did not "see" the sign....

The bit that made me angry was "we will leave a card", I have missed a few deliverys in the last few years and they have NEVER left a card !

I think this is going to lead to a lot more item not recived claims, as stuff is going to be left somewhere with no card left so the seller loses OR if its signed for at a dishonest persons house, the honest buyer will lose the money as paypal will think it was delivered.

I note the eBayesque line: ...to allow us to extend Delivery to Neighbour across the UK for the benefit of all customers.

What they really mean is for the benefit of Royal Mail - and sod what the paying customer wants.

Just a thought.

Suppose the neighbour has not opted out of the service.

But for example has gone on a round the world tour.

How the hell is one supposed to collect the letter.

How can it be acceptable for the Royal Mail to say that your letter is at an address which you have no access to.

I have been taking in mail for my neighbours for 30+ years and they occasionally do the same for me.

It might work in a "perfect world" scenario, but what if you have a problem neighbour ? I would not want my mail being left with just anyone.

Although our house is very, very rarely unoccupied Royal Mail still screw up quite a lot of our deliveries. We often find that they've just dumped packages outside the door without ringing the bell, knocking or attempting to see if anyone is home. Occasionally we find they've left a card saying they tried to deliver, yet, despite the fact that we hear the letter box when they put the card in, we don't hear them ringing, knocking or making any attempt to actually deliver the package.

Now they have a scheme whereby they want to deliver even less of our items to us and instead have an excuse to leave our belongings any-damn-where they please. So ..... nothing's changed, really.

I thought it was just me going nuts. I'm almost always home.....and hubby is often here.....and sometimes we get a card in the mailbox about 60 feet from the house, that we weren't home for delivery. Well, I was here.....don't know where they were. Guess they couldn't go that last little bit....
