Beautiful artwork, hope you can find out more about it. You might want to check:

    http://www.artfact.com/

I know it's another auction site, don't use that part of the site, but I do use the databases frequently to look up info..

Best wishes for many sales to all,

I would have said that was Chinese rather than Japanese but I'm no expert by any means.

    That's just a guess.

It's a beautiful painting whatever it is.

The writing doesn't look like any I have seen before, and the style of the lady and background make me wonder if it's made to look Japanese or Chinese - and isn't really......Whatever the truth is,..........it's well done and I like it!!

    HI

From the look of it, this is almost certainly a Watercolour over Charcoal drawing and done by a Male artist. You can tell it is a male artist by the square seal at the bottom of the inscription. When a seal is RED on WHITE or in other words the seal has a white background, it is a male artist. When the characters within this seal are White on a Red background, this is a female artist. The only way to tell exactly who painted it is by looking up the artists seal and unless you have a HUGE inventory of seals to work through, it may take some time. The best way to do this is to ask an Oriental art expert as if it is by one of the better known Chinese artists, it could be worth as substantial sum of money. I would say date wise it would be from around the early 1900's but not much earlier. Try to keep it out of direct sunlight also as this is what is causing the paper to turn brown

    Hope this helps
    Dean
