Thread: Paypal Phishing

  1. #1

    Default Paypal Phishing

Recieved an eMail from 'Paypal' with the follwing title and contents on 19th October:

    PayPal Final reminder:Your account is limited [ Scanned - 10/19/2012 ]

Your account has been temporarily limited
    Hello customer,
To get back into your PayPal account, you'll need to follow the next steps.
    It's easy:
1.Download and extract the form attached to this email, open it in a new secure browser window.
2.Confirm that you're the owner of the account, and then follow the instructions.
Page not working? If you are using Internet Explorer please allow ActiveX for scripts to perform all data transfers securely.

Please don't reply to this email. It'll just confuse the computer that sent it and you won't get a response.

    PayPal Email ID PP315
    ****************NOTICE OF CONFIDENTIALITY*******************

This email was sent by an automated system, so if you reply, nobody will see it. To get in touch with us, log in to your account and click "Contact Us" at the bottom of any page.

    --
This message has been scanned for viruses and
dangerous content by MailScanner, and is
    believed to be clean.

My account is not limited, and Paypal do not send documents for you to open your account if it is. In addition when looking at the full header I got 'Return-Path: <help@notify.paylpal.co.uk>'. So I forwarded the eMail to their phishing department.

    Here's the reply:

Thanks for taking an active role by reporting suspicious-looking emails.
Although we've determined that the email you forwarded to us is not a
phishing attempt, our security team is grateful for your concern.

Is it me or are Paypal either incompetent, lazy or stupid?

All three by the looks of things! And me being me, I'd have write back and ask them that question, pointing out spelling errors and grammar that no real company would use in the body of a letter/email. Scam, pure and simple.

I regularly get these & automatically forward them to spoof@paypal
Invariably they are just that - spoof.

I get those as well. I do go to the paypal page (not via any links) just to make sure

I get them also. But, I think the point of kreativebargains post was that this had been forwarded to Paypal's 'phishing' department only to get the following reply:

Thanks for taking an active role by reporting suspicious-looking emails.
Although we've determined that the email you forwarded to us is not a
phishing attempt, our security team is grateful for your concern.

Yes, it was forwarded to spoof@paypal as I usually do, but they said it is not a phishing attempt when it clearly is. I have no intention of opening the attachment, but would others do so after being told what I was. This looks like gross incompetence on behalf of Paypal. I have sent another message stating that this eMail is in my opinion a phishing attempt, and I added that if they can guarentee that it is not I will open the attachment and sue them for any resulting loss or damage, though I have no intention of opening it.

    Ye, agree with all that.
I usually delete mine too. Seems about right as it would appear useless sending them to paypal with that response!
Thanks for highlighting this though Kreative.

I get loads of these emails, I ignore them. If one looks convincing, I go and check my paypal from a new browser winder, not clicking through from the email. it has never proven to be a genuine email from them yet.
