Thread: Christmas irony

  1. #1

    Unhappy Christmas irony

    Between the wild weather and my other half not feeling too well, last night was pretty rough for me. I didn't get a whole lot of sleep and by the time the sky was starting to lighten I was more than ready to hit the hay.

    In recent months my neighbour has purchased an improved speaker system for his stereo and he is far from shy about letting us all share in the supior quality produced by it as he plays various Christmas themed songs.

    So imagine my joy to be awoken early today as his stereo blared out the words ".... sleep in Heavenly peace."

    Irony comes to town.

    Oh, Damian, that's horrible! When my mother had noisy neighbours she was planning Christmas carols first thing in the morning (when they were quiet). "Christians Awake, salute the happy morn" was her first choice.

    Here's no irony. My mother used to sing this to her children as she tried to rouse them. It was quite annoying to me but seems reasonable now.

    Work, for the night is coming,
    Work through the morning hours;
    Work while the dew is sparkling,
    Work ’mid springing flowers;
    Work when the day grows brighter,
    Work in the glowing sun;
    Work, for the night is coming,
    When man’s work is done.

    Work, for the night is coming,
    Work through the sunny noon;
    Fill brightest hours with labor,
    Rest comes sure and soon.
    Give every flying minute,
    Something to keep in store;
    Work, for the night is coming,
    When man works no more.

    Work, for the night is coming,
    Under the sunset skies;
    While their bright tints are glowing,
    Work, for daylight flies.
    Work till the last beam fadeth,
    Fadeth to shine no more;
    Work, while the night is darkening,
    When man’s work is o’er.
