two for making into convict smocks for my theatre groups (non-musical) summer production of Les Mis. Can be used, in fact prefer them like that because is cheaper! - looking for something cheap that can be re-made and then mangled... our charity-shop-fu is failing us on flat sheets of any colour but white.

Yes! Dyeing might be fun and you could even try using beets instead of chemical dye.

Or you could look for red curtains or draperies in charity shops. Long dirndl skirts are another possibility for yardage.

Last time I accidentally washed undies with a red shirt the whole load came out red.

Dyeing sheets is a good idea.

Dye in an automatic machine is so easy. You just MUST follow the instructions for cleaning the machine out afterwards. I am too mean to run the machine complete empty so I do things like dusters and the dog's towels in with the bleach wash that must follow dying.
