If you buy a "rare" coin on EBid and it turns out to be counterfeit, can anything be done via Ebid about it?

First step is to state your disappointment to the seller and see if you receive satisfaction. Assuming you prove it's a counterfeit and it's the one you acquired on eBid, and you've gotten nowhere with the seller, of course you must leave appropriate feedback as quickly as possible, to warn off other potential buyers. You can seek redress through PayPal if that's how you pay for the coin,

Naturally, like all other online venues, eBid is like the mall where storefronts set up, and is not the entity you must battle for justice, although if the seller is horrible to enough people, ebid will toss him/her out.

This is a "buyer beware" situation on all online sites, not just eBid.

I have read several articles warning buyers to be extremely careful when buying valuable coins on eBay, where the worst offenders have been active. They recommended escrow payments so the buyer can have the coin appraised before releasing the funds. Counterfeiters in China are very, very good, and about three years ago they started also counterfeiting the slabs used by the major coin grading services, so the fact that a coin is "certified" is meaningless too.

And as stated, there isn't anything the site can do except ban a seller after the fact. At the very least, only use PayPal so you can file a dispute and perhaps get your money back.

I purchased the coin right after joining, and I haven't received the coin yet, but on the advice of people who know more than I, the coin looks suspicious in the photos. I plan on having a professional numismatist look at it the moment I receive it. If it's phony, I'll contact the seller and ask for a refund, and I'll return him the coin, and he can go after whoever he got it from (assuming he's innocent). If he refuses, I suppose the prospect of a sour but coldly factual review and "use extreme caution with this guy" hanging around his neck may persuade him to change his mind. As it's a US coin, I suppose there's the option too of reporting a counterfeit valuable coin to the Secret Service, which may sound unappetizing, especially if he's willing to keep the profit from its sale even after being informed that it's counterfeit.
