It has been requested many times for this imposition of spaces inserted ad hoc to be stopped. The requests have never been granted though. I really don't see what purpose it serves.

It was introduced originally because listings with a string of characters & no spaces in titles was breaking the layout of the site. especially on the front page.

Obviously the site has changed a great deal since then, & the number of characters allowed in a title has increased from 55 to 80, so I really think it's time for a rethink.
