    Default Wireless Router installation

I received a wireless router from my niece without instructions. Having one would be beneficial to me so I can use my laptop online while hubby uses the PC and also be able to use an iphone (also something totally new to learn) which I will be receiving soon. It is to be hooked up to my modem. My internet provider does not offer modems with wifi any more.

I've searched on the internet for instructions, and I am seeing that it is fairly easy to install. However, I am a complete dumbo when it comes to this sort of thing and don't really understand what I am supposed to do.

I'm worried if I plug in the wrong bit in the wrong connection, I'll lose internet access altogether. Plus, I am supposed to create a password or something so others can't access my system.

I am so confused with all of this and would appreciate any help you can give me. I really need to be led by the hand on this one if anyone is patient enough with me.

    Thanks for reading.

When I installed our router, there really weren't many choices to make. There are only so many places it would attach and once there the computer prompted me for the other information. Things like the WEPkey, etc should be on the actual modem and can act to secure your connection.

I don't see WEPkey on my modem. I see P/N number

Hmmm ... have both on my modem. Did you check the support website for your computer or operating system?

If you are using windows, can go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Connect to the Internet

and it will walk you through the set up

Can you supply the make and model of the router, and I will see if I can dig anything up

And I'm no tech geek ... so this may be the case of the blind leading the blind.

Let's back up ... currently are you connected to the internet using a modem attached to your computer with a cable?

Are you trying to give an old lap top wifi access?

is your laptop set up for wireless as I had to buy a plug in thingy on my old laptop. Otherwise, I thought they all came with cd set up now, have you asked your niece if there's a cd?

Wireless router will be in lieu of the cable. As Nutty mentioned is your laptop wifi capable?
