Only when you get to the top. There are far more footballers who started life a little lower down the social ladder than in tennis. Probably not that many tennis courts on council estates, but plenty of goal posts drawn onto gable ends.

But all sports are getting to the stage where the rewards are out of touch with reality, Tiger Woods worth approximately $600 million, Rooney on £250,000 a week, plus endorsements, Beckham £165 million, Lewis Hamilton £20 million a year, Floyd Mayweather $115 million, Roger Federer $140 million, Michael Schumacher $400 million....the list goes on, and in virtually every sport the money for those at the top is astronomical and totally divorced from reality. And it is the sports fans who ultimately line the pockets of these sports stars. A trip to any major sporting event is now an expensive undertaking.

Having said that as well as getting the kids to try hard at their school work, any signs of sporting prowess will be actively encouraged in any way possible ...come on kids, the suns out get the tennis rackets and get out into the garden for a couple of hours practise!
