I like Putin..he appears about the fairest commentator out there in all this.
To get the facts straight, around 75% of the Third Reich’s military resources were deployed along the eastern front against the various member states of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. What most western people do not appreciate is that after the Jewish people had been wiped off the face of Europe, the Nazis intended to wipe the Slavic people off the face of Europe also. Europe was intended to be a Slav free zone from Poland all the way through to the Urals. The Third Reich’s eastern way was a war of annihilation against the Slavic people. The defeat of the German 6th Army at Stalingrad marked the turning of the tide for the Nazis. The Red Army pushed the Nazis all the way back to Berlin with very little support from other western Allies. Fascism in Eastern Europe was defeated not by the British or Commonwealth forces or by the Americans. It was defeated by the ordinary Soviet citizens of the Red Army and symbolised by the raising of the Red Flag over the Reichstag after the Battle of Berlin. The various republics of the USSR lost around 27 million people in what they refer to as the Great Patriotic War so they do know something about defeating Fascism. If David Cameron wants to talk about defeating Fascism, he should show the leadership that has failed to be shown by all previous British Prime Ministers and recognise publicly the role of the Red Army in defeating Fascism. And all the countries of Western Europe owe a debt of gratitude to the Red Army and to the Soviet Union for their role in defeating the Nazis. It was not Britain alone that defeated the Fascists.
Prior to the invasion of Poland, the British played a very fine poker game with the Nazis. They did not want the Nazis to be too strong but on the other hand were happy for the Nazis to be strong enough to be a bulwark against the Soviet Union. The political ideology of the Soviet Union viewed colonialism along the model of the British Empire as an extension of exploitative capitalism against the native populations of the British colonies. The British were happy for the Soviet Union to be distracted by a strong Hitler so that the Soviets would be less likely to cause trouble for the British at a time when there were increasing calls for independence and freedom from the British around the colonies of the British Empire. If David Cameron wants to talk about the British role in defeating Fascism, he should also make a balanced presentation to apologise for the British role in allowing Fascism to become so strong in Europe that a war was needed to defeat it.
Regarding slavery, it is not a very good presentation for David Cameron to boast about abolishing slavery when England prior to the Union with Scotland, and then Scotland also after the Union, engaged actively in slavery and made huge profits from it. Many of the old buildings of the City of London, Bristol, Liverpool and Glasgow were financed by the blood of African slaves exploited by the degeneracy of the British.
And regarding eBid, a thread calling the leader of the Russian Federation a cretin does not present a good image of eBid to potential buyers and sellers. President Putin did not make the remarks that have been reported. He should be shown more respect than be called a cretin. One thing that he most certainly is not is a cretin.
I agree with the above to a large extent.
However; Russia was only one of many nations fighting the Nazis.
It is true they took the brunt of the Nazi onslaught and suffered terribly.
But they were also sustained by US and British supplies sent via the arctic convoys, these convoys suffered their own terrible losses.
Then there was the bombing campaign by the USAF and RAF; this was in effect a second front.
Russia did not defeat the Nazis on their own, neither did we. It took many nations to fight in unity to achieve this victory.
And it will take United Nations to confront and defeat tyranny today.
Fat chance of that happening!

Some countries do recall past mistakes and learn the lessons from them

This feels like leadership and statesmanship to me.
And today the New York Times has published a communication from President Putin to the population of the USA which can be read at

It shows there is one national leader who can do joined up thinking.
I take exception to your comments.I as a polish descendant would like to bring to your attention the fact that there is not much difference between the fascism and communism. One is extreme right and one extreme left, both hell bent on destroying the freedom of the individual. You have forgotten that both Stalin and Hitler invaded Poland and West did not come to our aid.As far as slavery is concerned you are talking a lot of rubbish.England was the first country in the Western World to abolish it and it was Wilberforce who started the process. As far as World War II is concerned neither Russia on its own nor the West on its own would defeat Hitler without the aid of the USA which you are conveniently forgeting
Putin is a KGB thug who manipulated the Russian Constitution so that he could hold on to power. He supports Assad in Syria because Russia has a naval base in this country and all the syrian armaments come from Russia. There is no love lost between Assad and Putin.
