Default Newbie satmp seller - how to list - pics etc

    Hi Guys
I am thinking of listing some of my Dad's stamps on ebid.

I have never sold stamps before.

Do most people take pics of the stamps they are listing individually, or do you use stock standard pics for the,.

To me, it would seem very tedious to take pics and edit them etc of lots of stamps.

    What do you do ?

I would say you need to show pic of the actual stamp you are sellig

I would want to see the actual stamp and what condition it was in before I bought it. If they are used stamps then I would want to see if there was any damage and what the postmark was like. If it was a stock photo I wouldn't buy them, I would expect to get what I saw in your photo.

It is very tedious to take pics and edit them, and then list them in the correct category. Stamp categories can be complicated, as it depends on which country, which era, which year etc. If you know nothing about stamps maybe your dad ought to list them himself, or at least he will need to advise you as to which category each individual stamp should go in.

You scan and show every stamp you list. I know it is a pain but no one in their right mind would buy blind. In all my descriptions I always say - The stamps you see are the stamps you get I do not use library pictures.

Tedious or not you have to show the actual stamp(s).

You should also be aware that most collectors/dealers will only pay between 3% and 10% of catalogue value unless it is quite rare.

Take a look at some of my listings or other dealers and you will see what I mean.

You have bought from me in the past (thank you xx) so you know the score. Have you ever thought about listing in large batches ie countries, calculate how much they are worth and list accordingly bearing in mind What Would You Pay?

Do you have SG or Scott catalogue to give you a guide? If I can be of any assistance I am always here to help.

    Good luck

    Alan

Thanks for the advice on the pics.

As for selling stamps at 3 to 10% of catalogue value - FORGET IT.

I would not waste my time to list and then give them away at those prices!

Older stamps will have got rarer, so why only 10%?

    Hi
3 to 10% is a little low-I sell quite well at 20% for fine used, 30%+ for mint, but condition is very important. For example, it is quite easy to get an average used Penny Black for £20-30, whilst an unmounted mint copy will set you back £2000+!
Older stamps are not necessarily rare, some were produced in massive quantities, and still have a lot of copies floating around now.
It takes a lot of time and effort to list individual stamps-I can generate about 20 listings an hour at top rate (not very often!), but it is important to show the actual stamp for sale if it is used, as some collectors are looking for certain postmarks on certain stamps.

Good luck if you decide to list them, if you want any advice just ask
    All the best
    John

How about listing just a few at the time?

I would not bother to list one stamp at 10 or 20% of catalogue value.

Why is everyone giving stuff away?

    My time is valuable.

I'm afraid the days are gone when stamps sold at 50% plus of cat val. It is a buyers market and unless you have some rare pieces like a black plate 11 you will be lucky to get 20%

I list at 10% of catalogue value and always list the actual stamp(s).

I would be very rich if I got the actual catalogue value but they are a fantasy.

    Best wishes
    Alan
