Have used avast for years on a number of different computers ... no problems or viruses yet ... knock on wood!
Is that a free download? Or am I reading their website wrong.

Yes ... free! You can upgrade to get more features, but I've always just used the free one.
I also use avast free edition, been using it for about 6 years.
How would anyone rate Avast as compared to AVG free versions?
I have used Avira ( free and paid for versions) and been happy with it. Last your our bank offered Kaspersky for free, so we are using that. So far so good
I am still on Windows XP because the security features on newer versions of Windows often prevent me from opening a lot of my old electronic vehicle parts catalogues. Over the years I had constant problems with slow running on my computer due to my anti virus software. I also lost a lot of incoming e-mails because they were being shredded. Eset Nod32 is the fourth different brand of anti virus software that I have used with Windows XP and is the only one that has been problem free for me.
I have used a variety of Anti virus programs over the years, all have worked well for me except Norton and McAffee
Norton and the other one seem to want to take over your computer and make it run really slow.
some of the others I have used and found to be reliable are
Trend (Current one)
Bullguard
Kaspersky
Avast free version (currently on my smartphone and tablet)
AVG
and others.
