This was meant to be a joke - alright, a jokette.

You are being a bit selective in your quotes: I meant that if the Scots really want to leave us, we should leave them first so that they can have our EU membership. What a gift!

The choice about the Euro basket case economies would be entirely theirs - plenty of other nations are clamouring to join.

The other was a dig at a well-known war criminal.

Like most English, I would be sorry to see Scotland go. But if you do decide to do that, I hope it would be with all the good wishes and help we can give. I don't think Mr S does you a service by trying to whip up anti-English feeling, because I truly don't think there is much among most Scots.

Anyway, are you saying that Anthony "Your kinda Guy" Blair is a tinpot dictator?

Don't forget that this intellectual collossus was once our Prime Minister, a great pal of George W. (wonder what that stands for?) Bush, the bringer of World Peace. And was first-in-line for the throne as President of Europe, only pipped at the post by a social worker from Camden..

And is in great demand around the world to advise other tinpot dictators (oops, freudian slip) how to manage their money/ people.
Commands huge fees, hob-nobs with all the "best" people.

Look at the great job he's done in the Middle East. Just think what he could do for Scotland.

He'd probably sub-contract you to some Texas-based Foundation.

As I said in the very first line of my post, I recognise that it's meant to be tongue in cheek. But as I also said, the sentiment that you expressed is merely a variation on what everyone in Scotland has been told by successive UK governments for as long as I can remember.

For my entire adult life, there has been a narrative of: you're too small, you're too poor, you can't do it, we won't let you. So although your posting is tongue in cheek it's just a slightly humorous take on the same arguments that we've been hearing since, well, since forever.

Now I don't know how aware you are of the whole Independence situation, but I'd imagine it's probably only something that's raised its head in the rest of the UK in the last year or so. But this is something that we've been hearing for a long long time and to be honest, it grates a bit.

On one thing you are definitely right about though, there is very little ill-feeling towards the English (excluding the bampots). One thing that you won't find though, is Alex Salmond whipping up anti-English feeling. It's one of the things that the mainstream SNP are very carefull to avoid doing, the same however can't be said for some of the media reporting of what he's saying.

However, on a related note and much more importantly... Are you suggesting that Tony Blair wouldn't be a tinpot dictator.

No, this is something that's been going on long before Cameron. The original Scottish devolution referendum was in 1979. Yes won by getting the biggest share of the vote, however a Labour MP previously tabled an amendment which said that at least 40% of the population had to vote "Yes" (whether they voted or not), before a Yes vote would be recognised. So "No" won.

Ever since then there has been a constant narrative of Nationalists trying to get folk to go for independence, and Unionists telling us that we're too rubbish to manage it. Unfortunately virtually all print and TV media in the UK is Unionist to a greater or lesser degree.

Even more worrying is that we're starting to believe it.

That truly sucks about the nasty downtalk, but don't believe it. There was a time this country wasn't given odds for independence either...

However it goes, I do hope the people of Britain and Scotland will be happy and work together.

Best wishes for many sales to all,
