Thread: Finally, the Stamp Forum - our own spot on the forums.

Wow, our own spot on the forums. I asked for this when I first joined in 2010. I always thought that stamp collectors and sellers need their own forum spot to gather and discuss philately.

Now, if possible, the Philatelic group should be pinned to the top of Stamp Forum. If that could be done, I am sure that the membership of the group would also grow.

Ooooh, it's all shiny and new in here.

I now know where to come for some stamp advice.

    It even smells new!!

Allow me to make the first actual stamps comment: When I was a kid, like many kids then, I had a book in which I collected used stamps. My dad worked for a place near Chicago which got mail from around the world. He'd bring home the used stamps for me. So, with an occasional pack of mixed stamps from the local hobby shop, I was a happy camper! Never filled the book, but I had fun matching the stamps to the pics in the book, and filling blank spaces.

I don't really collect stamps anymore, but do consider them miniature works of art. I use non-rare stamps in some of my paintings, and still have my stampbook buried in storage in the states. Perhaps there is a treasure there.

How did you start collecting or selling?

I am really pleased the powers that be have finally given us stamp enthusiasts our own forum category to post in. Hopefully they can carry on the good work and review some of the requests for new and changed categories.

I started collecting as a small 5 year old, watching my father delve through bags of Commonwealth stamps before preparing them to go in one of his albums. It taught me a lot- patience, attention to detail, a fantastic source of information on History and Geography.

I started selling stamps about 12 years ago, trying to clear the decks of duplicates; Lots I purchased at auctions and stamp fairs many years ago for a few pounds are now worth considerably more, so I decided to use eBid as my platform for selling- IMHO, it is a great way for buyers to track down those missing stamps for their collections- they get a clear picture of whats on offer, and can purchase stamps from all around the globe- I have sold to many international customers, something a local auction or fair cannot do, so it gives the buyer much more choice.

All the best to all my fellow sellers, dealers and collectors

+1 on good to see this forum created.

I know very little about stamps, I collected them as a boy (a rather long time ago!) and enjoyed going through stamps handed down through the family (e.g. even several pages of penny reds) as well as mixed lots bought cheaply. Later I realised I would never "collect them all"! So I tended to go for ones with a nature theme.

One of my most stupid decisions ever, as a teenager, was to swap my Meccano set for a load of stamps. [sigh] To think, I could still have been doing useful things with Meccano even now, while my stamp collection has been useless to me for decades.

So I could certainly auction my stamps without feeling loss. But should I sell them individually? Or as single pages (one album is looseleaf, others would have to be ripped apart). Or as complete books, in which case how would the buyer judge worth? And is there enough traffic on eBid to ensure that my stamps would achieve market value?

Hoping to visit a Hong Kong philately shop tomorrow; who knows what I will find!

Ask them how they send items half way round the world for a total cost less than the postage alone would be within UK! We need more HK sellers on ebid, see if you can drum up interest, Bill!

    Have a good holiday!

Good morning! I am in the process of sorting through an accumulation of stamps that belonged to my in-laws. I must admit that I'm enjoying it! Since I know little about history and geography, I am getting an education. I find those little pieces of paper to be quite interesting.

But there are some stamps that I'm having difficulty identifying, so I hope I won't be a bother if I post some threads asking for assistance.

    :-)

Congratulations Stamp-folk from a jeailous Postcard Seller!!

But, I too have masses and masses of stamps to offer; I have started to list some, but it is really time consuming... I admire your patience!

Nice to see this new forum here. I sell a few stamps, and have many unlisted. Do not know tons about stamps, but always interested in learning about areas of collectibles.
