Thread: What "type" of photograph is this?

  1. #1

Default What "type" of photograph is this?

I've don google search and found a lot of interesting info on dating old pics but this one eludes me.

It's 7.25 x 10 inches.Back is plain white. It is very thin and almost feels like plastic of maybe some type of modern flashing but the tiny bit of wear to the lower left corner does reveal it to be some form card stock.

The border in the image has a mirror look to it,kind of shiny. Also what does the age appear to be?

I don't want to list it until I can get a little more specific. Thanks in advance.

Dunno what the process is, but circa 1910 is my guess for age.

I would say it's a sepia photograph taken around the late 19th Century.

Daguerreotype, starting in the 1830s, often had the edged effect you see in the photo, but there were lots of later experimental process later in the 19th century.

Can't agree with you on this Bill as I think the clothing dates this photograph to late 1800, early 1900's.

    I just love a banter!

    Gill.
Bill mentions later in 19th century which is late 1800's, so you could both be right.

To me the gents clothing in particular looks after 1900, but then again I am no expert.

Yes kb we may both be right but Bill starts at the 1830's which is early 19th. I'm thinking more 1890's up to 1918 give or take a year.

Thanks all.I've found an add from 1919 and the men's jackets look very similar so around that time is what I am thinking.

I'd say pre WW1 because they are smiling and seemingly unconcerned - there seem to be four couples not effected by the ravages of that terrible war. There are no "Thousand yard stares" on the men's faces.
