Just had the same problem with compat ink-- ruined my canon printer, I wonder if something has changed in the compatible inks as I have not had any probs before.I had the canon for a few years so it was old
Just bought an epson and the new ink pack with all 4 inks was only £27 from pc world which was nearly cheaper than the compatible canon ink.
it does pay to shop around tho.

    Cheers Alan

I've used compatible carts in my Epson since day one. If you can find a good brand then no problems. Some brands I have learned to avoid.

Printer is still going fine. Now so old that about a year ago I had to dismantle it as it was flagging that the ink soakaway pad buried in the base was due change (for 'change' read 'replace printer') and the printer was refusing to go any further. A rather messy job followed involving sturdy plastic bags and an old clothes mangle to squeeze out the waste ink and refit the pad. Found a bit of software to reset the printer firmware and all was good and the printer has a second life. I did wonder if a babies disposable nappy could have been made to replace the pad; thought of it too late to try it though.

Printers, like life, are a lottery. If there is a major price difference between compatible and manufacturers ink prices then economically the risk could be worth it when the actual printer hardware is so cheap (the manufacturers making their money on the sales of ink rather than printers).

Very true. Just had the same discussion at work. Apparently some printers are sold at a loss because they make so much on the inks.

Tried to find out how old my printer is; I couldn't find the original invoice though. Found the invoice to my scanner and that is almost 15 years old. The printer is a good bit older than the scanner, so could be pushing 20 years old. I don't think I could moan about either's longevity.

wow Astral! I go through a printer a year usually. In some cases it was actually buy a new printer rather than replace the inks. 2 years ago Tesco were doing a special on HP printers and the one I got should have been £75 and I got it for £25. I bought 2 at the time and both are still going strong. I was never able to figure out the wireless settings so my OH's one hasnt been used since we moved house but it means i have a replacement when my one fails

Shows how expensive ink is. A 14 year old did a school project and worked out that the US government could save over $400 million a year simply by changing the font they use. Certain fonts use more ink apparently.

Be careful with compatable ink. I used some in my last printer and it ruined the printer. I always buy the genuine ink now.

Those who said it pay's to shop around then I want to add this was in just 1 shop, other shops were charging more for the genuine ink but never showed or had the manufactured ink in place. Even Cartridge world were going to charge me more than the genuine

Craig as Brunwulf says in his post you can save a lot of money on HP inks by shopping around.
