I made and lost £10,000,000 in one day on Ebay, so my selling credentials are long...

While I may be willing to listen to someone that had made ten million pounds... I wouldn't be willing to listen to someone that then went on to lose it.

any way, here is the story
In 2006 on the Big brother show, they did a competition for people to get a free pass on to the show, if you found a golden ticket is a special kitkat bar, you got into the audience, one of that audience was to be selected for BB.
When this competition was announced, i put a kitkat bar on ebay with the description that it MAY contain a golden ticket, on a 24 hour auction, a bit of a laugh jokey auction tat i thought may raise a tenner for a laugh, I listed it at 5.30pm on the Thursday afternoon to end 24 hours later.

The next morning it was on a quid, ok broke even on it near enough i thought and it stayed that way till i got home about 2.30pm, the after a very short while it jumped to a tenner, then 20-30-100 and before the hour was out it was on 500, with less than 24 hours left, i could not cancel the auction, i phoned ebay and they said there was nothing that could be done, i knew i would not get the 500 for it, ugh, then i had a thought, get a mate to bid it up then we would cancel the transaction after wards, so he place 1000 on it, was out bid immidiately, he ducked out at 15000, omg i could not believe what i got my self into, My missus was getting quite pee'd off with me at this point. a joke gone wrong.
I asked my mate who owns a pc shop and who was an ebay guru at the time, he said you can only ride it out at this time.
My other mate was watching the auction, i could not look, 2 hours to go, he called me to say that all the workers in his office were now watching this auction, "Do you know what it's on now mickey" he said, no i cant look was my reply, £35000 it was on, oh ffs, i could not belevie it, it was shooting up and up while he was on the phone to me right there, it was now on £150,000 then 500,000, when i passed the 1 million, i felt physically sick, seriously, felt like crying, the fee's would be astronomical,
"OMG" wifey exclaimed, it's on 5 million, before we knew it it worked its way up to £10,000,000, by this time my legs were shaking, not out of the thought of earning that much, but out of owing the fee's when i get a none paying bidder which i was well aware that would happen!!!
then my mate who owns the pc shop called back and asked have you tried cancelling the bids, then a moment of clarity came, NO i haven't i exclaimed, 30 mins to go, i gave my mate my log in details and we both set about cancelling the bids, every so ofter the bids would jump back up but, we steadily got rid, at the end, it finally sold for a quid, I have never felt such relief in my life, i tell you, the funny thing was the guy who finally got the winning bid, stiffed me for the quid lol
so there it is, how i made and lost 10,000,000 quid in one day on ebay

A story like that, in the right place, could get publicity! Though I'm glad it's not about eBid, for it paints ebay as an auction site where dodgy things can happen. Which is true enough.

I don't see what the point of this story was in the context of which it was raised. It has nothing to do with any deliberate business decision, involved bogus bidding, and threw away the chance of even a modest profit.
