I agree, it's a Cretan Dagger, on the blade is inscribed a poem or song and an image of the island of Crete.
Steeped in folklore, tradionally worn by the men of the Island.

    The Photo of text:

    κριτικον αναμηνστικον

means Souvenir of Crete. I have typed lower case and not upper. Κριτι (Kriti) pronounced Kreetee is the name of the island. The main pic has a poorly done outline of the island plus the text.

I'll have a go at the rest later. Modern Greek...I know enough to find my way and make sure I do not starve to death. Much happier in the New Testament or Classical!

So may take me a little while - am sure it is nothing earth shattering but know what you mean...it's a "must know!"

I " googled" it and found something that looked identical - it was described as a christening knife, unsuccessful in finding a translation for the writing on the sheath tho.

Looking again am 90% certain that this iS modern with a few classical echoes...probably from Homer. Going back to pronunciation Kriti etc then we have the much vaunted Νικη (Nike) pronounced Nikee and meaning Victory. And they all argue is ir Nike (like bike) or Nykee (like my key)...both wrong!

Not modern poetry nor classical...more like chocolate box prose "My Gift is" etc.....some words difficult to spell out because of lighting. Might be easier if rubbed with soft pencil (2b) on tissue.
