Thread: 100g small parcel to Europe

  1. #1

Default 100g small parcel to Europe

I am just looking at Royal Mail prices for a small parcel not exceeding 100g

    It is telling me that
International Standard (Airmail) is £3.20 Europe and £4.00 for Australia which
    is fair enough.

International Tracked & Signed is £8.20 Europe and £9.00 Australia - fine

International Tracked (Airsure) is £9.84 E.U. and £9.00 Australia

So am I right in thinking if I send something to Australia fully tracked and a
signature on delivery it will be 84p cheaper than sending something to Ireland
just tracked and not getting a signature?

Not sure if I have lost the plot or if Royal Mail has.

    .

    In my reckoning....

Northern Ireland would be £4.30, small parcel, 1st Class or £3.90 2nd Class (signed for, ie with Tracking ID))
Southern Ireland would be £8.20, tracked & signed

But then again, I may also have lost the plot?

Yes, that's correct. International Signed For is an extra £5 on top of the standard rate. Beware that International tracked (used to be called Airsure) doesn't get a delivery signature. The anomaly re Ireland being dearer than Australia is that for some reason there is VAT charged on Europe International Signed For but not Australia. Any tax experts around?!!

VAT has to be charged when an item is sent anywhere within the EEC. Member countries cannot logically charge tax outside the Union. You see a similar thing happening in the US where each State has its own Sales tax, chargeable within the State but not if posted to another State.

It still doesn't make sense that if its tracked and signed its 80p cheaper to send to Europe rather than Australia but if its only tracked and not signed it 84p more expensive than sending to Australia.

You can still send a parcel up to 100 gms to anywhere in Europe for only 20p more than in your own home town, if it is thicker than abt 20mm.
At one time, before recent changes, it was cheaper to ship to Europe than to UK if the parcel was not thin.

We must be the only postal service in the world where thickness figures more than weight in postal costs.
