Thread: Indian States

  1. #1

    Default Indian States

Can anyone identify the items in the attached images?

The first image shows what I believe to be three items from Indian States although it is not known whether or not they are postal in origin, are stamps or cut-outs, or are for non-postal purposes. Any guidance would be appreciated.

The second image shows an overprint on a KGVI Indian stamp. The overprint does not tally with anything in Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue. Any ideas ?

    thanks and regards

    Ray

    Hi Ray
The Indian overprint is from Muscat, SGO44 I believe, not sure on the three others but the third looks more Arabic to me

I think #3 is Faridkot 1887 but Yvert says this stamp was never used.

#1 if you turn it through 90 degrees is from Hyderabad.1871

#2 is upside down, but I still don't recognise it.

I know nothing about stamps but No.1 to me, looks like the equivalent of a franking mark.

Thank you all for your replies - something there for me to move along with. Apologies for the delay in responding - I have been away for a few days.

    Hi John

Good to hear from you, and thanks for identifying the Muscat stamp. I would never have thought of looking at Muscat for an Indian stamp overprinted. Another benefit of this forum.

    best wishes

    Thanks Bill

re Faridkot - I do not have Yvert but SG BC has some note about stamps from 1887 but no illustration. Now I have a lead from you I can try tracking down copies on the internet.

    re Hyderabad - thank you.

re number 2 - thanks for indicating it is upside down - that is a bit of progress for me!

    best wishes

    Thanks Gill

Even if you did know something about stamps, some of these Indian States items defy easy identification.

    best wishes
