Above shows how Binoculars and telescopes are located in Photography. They have nothing to do with photography, and I suggest they belong in Sporting Goods.

Who would ever think to look for binoculars or telescopes in photographic related items? Not associated at all. Thanks.

Maybe simpler to rename the main category to something like Photographic and Optical.

They are also some of those things that cross category boundaries, and need ghosting into categories such as sport, outdoor pursuits, voyeurism(?!), etc.

Good point. I bought binos on eBid a while back (for birdwatching) and never noticed this, shame on me.

I've just moved a pair from "photographic" to "Sporting goods", so I'll see if it makes a difference.

Problem is that binoculars are used for things other than sports, in fact they are probably not used much for sports at all, apart from horse-racing. I should think most sports are too fast to even get focussed.

Imagine watching tennis with binoculars, or, better still, a telescope.

I would think that most are used for birdwatching, not a sport, or spying on the neighbours, also not a sport however sporting the neighbours are!!

Ii would consider birdwatching a sport......it can involve walking, and stretching, and such. It's also a hobby, or avocation, but it does involve, often, physical activity. Anyway, it's more of a sport than it is photography. I didn't know you had binoculars, squern. It will be interesting to see if the location makes any difference. I suspect (based on my poll of 1 (me)) that more people search via a word than in the category, but it only takes one to make the correction worthwhile.

As for astral.................you just reminded me; I need to buy curtains.

I spent the last 11 years of my employed life (having taken early retirement from teaching) working for a photographic company. We sold all items optical and at Christmas especially biggest sales were for binoculars and telescopes, including the usual poor quality astronomical scopes (I nearly wrote "astral").

Many birdwatchers use cameras as well, often in tandem with their telescopes etc. Attachments are available to enable photography through the 'scope; we sold many of these. I have always associated things optical with cameras, the sole exception being spectacles. However I have never seen any optical equipment in a sports goods shop with the exception of range finders used for golf; We had many asking us for them too!

I spent ,more hours a day teaching in that shop than I had in my teaching career!

I think the Photography and Optics would be a good solution, with it ghosting to sporting goods, then. Is that the right term? In the US, sporting goods shops are often major outlets for binoculars. Maybe that's not the case in the UK.....
