Some positive news on the political front for a change.

The private sector (banks) was not able to continue funding the high levels of research and development to take the concept to working reality. The public sector (the Scottish Government and Agencies) have stepped in with funding to help the development progress.

Some of the strongest tides in the world are experienced off the coast of Scotland. To be able to generate power from the tides will be a big achievement.

If only the governments had followed this route instead of windfarms we would be a lot nearer to supplying the country with green energy and we would not need fracking.
Now all we need is funding for tidal turbines on the sea floor in places with high tidal flows. Out of sight so no problems with views and visual amenity. Power could be brought ashore using the same transmission systems as those needed to bring wave power ashore. Would have the added benefit of producing a no-go areas for fishing and other activity giving de facto marine nature reserves and breeding ground for fish. Win all round.

Not sure how it's going in the rest of the UK, but in Scotland tidal seems to be far more advanced and successful than wave. It's estimated that the Pentland Firth alone could generate 8 TWh and as a result investment seems to be bearing fruit... There's some impressive looking kit here: http://www.power-technology.com/proj...lant-scotland/

Unfortunately wave power is talking a long time to get anywhere. Pelamis recently went bust after 16 years and £90 million of funding, and Aquamarine Power laid off most of its staff. It seems that it might be a long time before wave power is commercially viable

Geo-thermal is supposed possible in the UK. Feasibility studies have proven in the past.

Sadly, the type of deep hot rock we have under the UK would entail fracking to join the bores - which has now become a pretty sensitive subject.

Changing the topic again, this kind of smoke and mirrors is a bit over the top and does little to build trust in what politicians say:

Scotland must be doing really well, Scottish power company have just been given a grant to PLANT another 100 wind turbines off the Suffolk coast. a grant of 2 billion, but a complaint that they are only allowed 100 turbines( we are told these are going to be twice the size of the hundreds we already have off the essex coast......such a shame eh?
